« on: January 22, 2007, 05:55:27 PM »
I am planning a big, big Montreal trip for early this summer... like last year's... only funner!

Can any of my friends in the north let me know if I'll have difficulty with customs attempting to enter le Canada avec my medications and HIV status?

It would be most appreciated!

Thank you!

I honestly dont see why not. It's not like you are planning to live here. You are visiting and its not like you are going to tell customs you are poz...not something you want to advertize huh.

Have fun in Montreal ;)

Make sure you carry your prescription bottles with your name on them. I also had a letter from my doc that the meds I was carrying were in fact mine. I didn't even need that letter & had no problems with customs in Canada or the U.S., but in this Post 9-11 world it pays to play it careful.

Have fun in Montreal.

I believe new regulations went in effect just today and everyone needs passports when traveling by air.

link

Otherwise I've NEVER had a problem when traveling to any Westernized country with HIV medication.

The ONLY country in the industrialized world you will have issues with customs is the United States.

No passport needed by car, bike or foot..., but by Air you will need one.  Meds, no issue for me.  I just carry my load in one bottle - never questioned.

Have fun and I still want my TV back  ;D

I still take everything in the original bottles with the pharmacy script, ALWAYS.  I've had the stuff looked at and as long as it's like that no questions will be asked.  At Charles de Gaulle in October I was searched TWICE and they went through everything during that OMGTERRORISTSWITHLIQUIDS stuff.  At least I got to practice my French with security which they appreciated, complimented me on my taste in shoes and gave me free newspapers.  Unfortunately they took about $50 in Kiehls.

June 2005 effective changes to visitor visa process affecting entry into Canada for people living with HIV/AIDS:

Canada does NOT require people applying for a visa to enter Canada as a short term visitor to disclose known HIV infection on the visa application form.

Canada does NOT routinely impose mandatory HIV testing on short-term visitors, nor does it categorically bar visitors based on their HIV-positive status.

HIV-positive status does NOT prevent a person from visiting Canada, but for the rare and exceptional circumstance where the person's health condition is such that they are assessed as likely to require health and social services, during their stay in Canada, that will create an excessive demand on Canada's public system (e.g., hospitalization). This is the same standard applicable to all persons.

I have been eight times to Montreal and it is a delightful place to visit and vacation-- my favorite city in North America (although it is rivaled now by Las Vegas.)  As the others said, you should carry on your prescription bottles (I am sure you would never place your meds in your checked luggage) and there are no health questions as you clear customs.  If you have never been and would like some recommendations for accomodations in the city, send me a PM and I will gladly share some with you.  Have a great trip....and make sure you have a passport as they are mandatory now.

Same here, but only in the summer months.  Summers in the South can be brutal, but the winters here generally aren't too bad.

David

Why do you think I go to Montreal in the summer?  I can wear my sweet velvet "please do me, I think it's 1967" blazer on June evenings there.

Plus, I absolutely fell in love with that city the first time I went three years ago.  Le sigh.

The only trouble I had in Montreal was trying to explain why I had flippers and snorkelling gear in my bag for a three day visit in October 2004.

The customs officer did not seem convinced that I was travelling on to Mexico, despite having a ticket for the next leg of the journey, so they searched me and my bag looking for traces of explosives.
