AIDS group to sue Pfizer over Viagra ads
« on: January 21, 2007, 05:05:48 PM »
FYI:

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) told Reuters it wants Pfizer to be barred from marketing Viagra as a lifestyle or sexual enhancement drug. The nonprofit organization said Pfizer's actions had led to risky behavior by men and an increase in HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

"Pfizer has created and contributed to the perception of Viagra as a safe, sexy, lifestyle, recreational drug, to be frequently used regardless of the degree, or even existence of" erectile dysfunction, the group said in draft legal documents.

Never used the stuff - but they sure do advertise a lot and wish they'd put that money into other medication research.

Yes but think of the JOY this accidental discovery has brought to millions

People's gonna shag whatever, before Viagra there was Cavaject (now, that's an experience especially when it don't go down after 8 hrs and you have to aspirate...)

More pressing for me is the annoyance that Advocate Anthony Brink of the "Treatment Information Group" (a narrow front for a German vitamin salesman) has filed charges against Zackie Achmat of South Africa's Treatment Action Campaign of genocide with the International Court in The Hague.

Oh hear we go again...   Somehow commercials are so persuasive and so influential that the billions of people who have sex daily are suddenly influenced in their desire by the flashy pretty images on the TV screen.  I don't know if it's ever occured to anyone, but people were hopping into bed whenever feasible a whole lot before its advent.  How about people take responsibility for their own actions, including AIDS education organizations who haven't done such a great job educating people about how the disease is transmitted and what needs to be done to protect each other.  Instead, let's blame a drug (cuz we know gay men are famous for staying away from those).  Whatever.  I really find most businesses decisions to be vile, but I firmly believe that there has got to be a logical limit to what they can be held responsible for.   No one forces people to run out and buy a bunch of viagra so they can get their party started.

Um, Puck... I'd never had sex, much less an erection all by myself... until I saw the Viagra commercial on the box with the moving pictures.

Then, armed with this new knowledge, I did... and look where I am now.

Viagra gives you AIDS.

Duh.  Squared.

That said, yeah... this lawsuit is pretty effin' ridiculous.

I agree with Puck...people should take responsibility for their own actions....  Viagra has made sex possible again for many who couldn't or had trouble
maintaining an erection....thus giving them a new lease on life...  Of course down the road we may discover side effects to this marvelous little invention
that might have it taken off the market.  Either way its a personal choice to take this medication...Pfizer is NOT stuffing it down anybody's throat.

This lawsuit in my opinion is frivolous and without merit....

This lawsuit is such crap. Hey, who can I sue for my HIV infection, because it can't possibly be my fault.

Yes it seems all the drug companies are concerned with is working on how to give guys like Larry King a stiffy.
Actually the drug companies bring in ka-zillions if $$$ but spend most of it on repackaging old drugs and pushing off as new (minor adjustments in the old lab), and spending on advertising.

And its getting worse. This will soon be a big issue as the democrats in congress try to reverse the Bush admin stopping open market
medications, i.e. shopping for the best price like the vets admin does. The Bush admin stopped this with Medicare and shot drug costs up overnight for those that need it most like you and me and the older folks.

Democrats are going to try to reverse this clamp put onto the US Medicare system by our WONDERFUL president and HIS congress.
(the congress we just voted the hell out of there)
So when the democrats in congress bring this issue up soon, be prepared to see a deluge of TV ad's warning (really threatening) us that the poor drug companies will no longer have any $$$ for new research if congress has it way. And Bush will echo the drug companies WORD FOR WORD.
Just don’t be taken in or fooled by what you are about to be hit with.

The lawsuit and Viagra itself leaves me lost.  If I remember correctly, the med. use came about because researchers noticed a side effect to a drug which was being studied for another use.  If so, we start with a drug side effect to justify the research costs.  Then you do have to have a prescription: someone (your doctor) has to 'buy' that you need it, unlike recreational/party drugs, so there is a clear hurdle to climb which should knock out the lawsuit.  And Viagra and its peers only provide the physical side effect.  They don't affect the mental state, so, unlike party drugs which do, I don't buy the connection between Viagra and more unsafe sex.  Is Sustiva next? Oysters? So is this use of the group's funds on attorney fees an assault on sex as serosorting might be seen to be? Win

I assume what they are doing is pointing out that here in America there is one message to kids never ever have sex! Then they put out ed drug commercials, yet never tied to condom/safe sex  commercials.
I think the point of this lawsuit is to show the hypocrisy of our culture.
From 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. we are inundated with viagra/ get it up drugs with little reference to std's. Gee where is the christian rite ?
I guess my mom was right ... it will make you go blind  ;)

I think Viagra brings an older age group into the mix, maybe they should sue Elvis's estate... you know he ultimately caused the sex craze culture according to our great grandparents. ;)

People really need to consider the source of this Viagra lawsuit -- AIDS Healthcare Foundation -- and then dismiss it from their minds the same way courts all over the country eventually dismiss all of AIDS Healthcare Foundation's lawsuits.

That "foundation" is a California not-for-profit corporation that has revenues in the tens of millions of dollars and their executives are handsomely paid.

The news article about the lawsuit on www.money.cnn.com states, "The suit also requests that Pfizer turn over profits gained from misleading ads and pay AHF's costs of treating AIDS and other illnesses linked to Viagra use."

Looks like someone's bucking for a pay raise, huh?

If you lend any mind to that lawsuit, then you've fallen into a trap.

POZ News: "Pfizer Sued Over Viagra Ads"
« Reply #11 on: January 27, 2007, 07:39:00 AM »
We're starting this thread so that folks can comment on the following news item posted on POZ.com:

January 22, 2007

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation filed a lawsuit against Pfizer today, claiming that the pharma giant encourages recreational use of its erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, thereby increasing unsafe sex and fueling new HIV infections. By making Viagra sounds like a “party drug” in its ads, says AHF, Pfizer’s marketing is “deceptive” and “irresponsible.”

Take a look at what people are saying about this...

So what do folks think about this?

There's already this thread that Tucsonwoody started earlier this week: http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=8117.msg95994
(for reference really, this link)

It seems to me a dumb-ass thing to do, time and energy wise, and only in America, I mean, Sustiva, Reyataz, everything else in medicine gets the "lifestyle" marketing treatment, every drug, every condition. That's the nature of the US pharma market You can't advertise prescription drugs in the UK, but people still use Viagra "off-label" and get it, or its equivalent, "off-presciption". Indeed, Viagra + Crystal Meth = Rx for HIV Infection may well be true, but this is a mindset problem and more responsible marketing ain't gonna stop this.

Furthermore, it seeks an unspecified amount to cover an increase in treatment costs borne by the nonprofit group, which runs free treatment clinics.

Seems a bit of an overraction- people who have unprotected sex will have unsafe sex with or without Viagra- time would better be spent advocationg for more funding, and/or poltical causes. Sheesh!
