Hi,

I would like to enquire something regarding the transmission of HIV virus. This is the scenario.

I went to do a pedicure, and there was a customer who did pedicure few hours before me. When the manicurist started to cut my cuticles, she tore the skin and it started to bleed. Her immediate reaction was to take cuticle oil and brush the oil over my broken skin which was bleeding.

My question is, can HIV transmit thought this manner. Assuming the girl before me is a HIV carrier, and has an open wound that was bleeding as well. If the manicurist brushed the oil over her wound, and kept the brush back into the bottle. Few hours later, she uses the same bottle of oil and brush over my wound, will i get infected?

My question is, can the virus stay alive in the bottle of cuticle oil, and infect me when she brushed the infected oil over my bleeding wound? I have read in some articles that the virus CANNOT be killed in petroleum based lubricant when tested in lab, even though they used the strongest disinfectant and soaked it for 2 hrs. I am very worried right here, and should i go for a test in this case? I am also worried if she sterilized her equipments thoroughly.

Thank you for answering my question, as i really need professional help and answers here. The websites are giving me different information all together.

Regards

Jayne-

Under no circumstance is this an HIV situation, no matter what spin you put on it.

HIV is passed by unprotected vaginal or anal sex or by sharing IV drug equipment with someone who is HIV positive. Pedicures don't count, but do make your feet more attractive in sandals.

Jayne,

As Brent told you, in no way is this an hiv situation. Hiv is primarily transmitted through unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse and so here's what you need to know in order to protect yourself:

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL STIs together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with a sexually transmitted infection. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Get all the pedicures you want - there is NO danger of hiv. Just make sure you're using condoms for intercourse and you'll be fine.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Hi, but is there any possibility that the oil can keep the virus alive? As shown on some reports and papers? Anyone have any idea about this? Thank\x

No. NO. And again, NO!

After uncounted many thousands of nicks, cuts, bruises and various beauty parlor and barbershop accidents, there has never, (repeat NEVER), been a case of transmission in this manner.

It's safe to say you aren't going to make history by becoming the first. Really.

Get on with your life.
