Thanks Cindy. Er, I mean Alex.  :-*

Here's one I told you about by one of my favourites, Jann Arden.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Zc0QnqCWRg

Factoid: Insensitive (1994) became a smash hit in Italy when it was used in a ad for bluejeans.

Insensitive was not written by Jann, but by her friend Anne Loree.

Jann's mama sewed all the drop down banners thrown from the buildings in this video.

The guys were cute, Rod?  They were red hot! ::)
Anyway, there are so many Canadian singers in France, Alex.  I'll start with the most difficult of them all.  I say "difficult" because she is very picky about her videos and, therefore, you don't find them easily in the Net.

Natasha St. Pier  --- Tu Trouveras
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MMl98Ixpys
These are actors, I suppose, not the real singer.

You can see Natasha in this video:

Musicians honour Joni Mitchell at gala

Monday, January 29, 2007

The Canadian Press

Her lower lip dropping at times, her eyes fixed on the stage, Canadian songwriter Joni Mitchell smiled, giggled and swayed to the music Sunday as she was serenaded and praised by famous friends, including James Taylor, Herbie Hancock and Chaka Khan.

The legendary musician received a trophy from the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame with humour and warmth at its annual gala, laughing and wondering aloud what she should say as she took the stage in front of a standing ovation.

Her first song was written at about age 21, Mitchell recalled, "and as you know, I wrote a lot of them," she said to laughter.

"A lot of them are quite orthodox," continued Mitchell, draped in a flowing olive and mauve outfit.

"You know, I'm told that I'm really born with a scientific bent more than a creative [bent], I need to explore and discover and so that has given me, really, to some what seems like courage but really it's just in my stars, there's nothing I can do about it."

Earlier, Hancock described Mitchell's music as vital, and her songwriting "a map to the human heart."

"Joni had vision so far out on music's horizon that she would never stay in one place with one sound," said Hancock, a jazz innovator who collaborated with Mitchell on the 1979 album "Mingus."

"The word that comes to me when I think of Joni is: unbridled. And her career is a story of freedom of expression."

Mitchell receives accolades

Hancock and Khan wowed the audience with a jazzy version of Mitchell's hit Help Me, while Taylor performed her song Woodstock.

"Joni, you've been a dear friend and a great wellspring of inspiration musically to me throughout these years," Taylor said before his acoustic performance. "I love you."

Country pioneer Wilf Carter, Broadway lyricist Raymond B. Egan and Montreal chanteur Jean-Pierre Ferland were also inducted into the hall of fame.

Ferland was also presented with a custom-made guitar by cousins and luthiers, Robin and Claude Boucher of Berthier-Sur-Mer, Que. Boucher, who have been making guitars for 35 years. Ferland was to be recognized in performances by francophone stars Isabelle Boulay, Laurence Jalbert and Mario Pelchat. French star Patrick Bruel sent in a videotaped address from Paris.

Ferland is considered a figurehead of Quebec music, receiving two major tributes from his peers in recent years.

Classic songs inducted at the ceremony included David Clayton-Thomas's Spinning Wheel, Ralph Freed and Burton Lane's How About You and Sylvia Tyson's You Were On My Mind, recorded with her then-husband Ian Tyson.

Mitchell, an accomplished singer, painter, poet and photographer, has won over audiences with versatile forays into folk, pop, rock and jazz circles.

Her songs have been covered by thousands of artists, including Judy Collins, Fairport Convention, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Aimee Mann and Sarah McLachlan.

The concert will be broadcast on CBC Radio on Monday and on CBC-TV in March.

A review I wrote about the new Jann Arden CD of cover songs for Amazon.ca:

UNCOVER ME hit the shelves here in Ottawa yesterday. This morning I got a copy at my local HMV, and I am mightily impressed. Jann not only revisits these songs from my childhood and youth with excellence, but makes them her own in interpretation. The original tune, "Counterfeit Heart" is beautifully performed as well.

Standout tracks for me are Jann’s cover of Janis Ian’s 70s hit song “At Seventeen,” Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain,” and the Petula Clark song “Downtown.” Love the groovy flashback 60s instrumentation on that one. It’s fitting that she closes the CD with a take on “Solitaire,” since I know Jann is a Carpenter’s fan as am I.

I love what she’s done with all of these songs! Those who are familiar with Jann Arden’s work are unlikely to be disappointed in this new release.

Alex,
I refrained from posting this link 'cause I just adore this singer.  Anyway, here goes one of the most famous Canadian singers in France!

Val stole my big guns with Diane Dufresne, whom I adore. You wouldn't happen to have a link to "Un Souvenir Heureux"?

But these two are lovely lovely songs:

And, of course, kd lang as drag queen's always fab:

I saw K D Lang in concert when I lived in Baltimore.  She' s not only a great singer, but an excellent performer as well.

This was during the C&W period of my life.  I had broken up with a guy and decided to go out as I was feeling down.  It was Country & Western night, and I thought who the heck wants to listen to country & western music in a bar.  Well, this attractive lesbian came over, introduced herself and told me that I was going to go and learn the circle dance they were doing on the dance floor at the time.  I learned the dance, met her equally attractive girlfriend, and was addicted to country & western.  I in turn introduced my friend Marcy, that was a trainer at my gym at the time..............she also became addicted.

We danced one night during the week and then on Sunday evenings.  It was such a great group of people.........younger, older, men and women............singles, and couples.  One friend, who was a band leader, actually rented a bus one Sunday to take everyone to Trax in DC as they had country & western on the last Sunday of the month, all he asked was that we tip the busdriver.

Gosh, how I miss those days.......................dancing is something that is really missing in my life.  But, I'm so grateful I had that time...........................it was such an incredible time in my life and there will never be another like it!   Although, I did just recently visit Baltimore and stay with the equally attractive girlifriend mentioned earlier...................and we did attend c&w night at the Hippo................................and no it wasn't the same.  But, it was great to see some familiar faces and to dance!  It's always great to dance!

Sorry, not all on topic, but mention of KD Lang invoked these memories!  It's just shows you how related everything is really.

Bucko..I loved "Miss Chatelaine" I've never heard that one before..if you ever come across the video of "Hush sweet Lover" I would love you to post the link for me, if you wouldn't mind.

Scott..I saw K.D in concert in Perth Australia..what an amazing experience that was, I just love her...when she sang "Crying" you could hear a pin drop and the audience exploded when she finished...just wonderful.

I just want to thank allopathicholistic for starting this and everyone who posted links on this thread. It is refreshing after all the "heavies" in other areas of this forum. It reminds me to play more of my music in the course of my day.

Bucko..Thank you, thank you, a million times thank you.

When this song first came out I jokingly said to my youngerst daughter "you know, she is the only one I would leave your father for" and imagine my surprise when she said 'yeah, me too".. ;) :D.

Thank you again, I simply love this song..very sexy...and yes for old those out there who are now sitting with open mouths..granny Jan does know what sex is about..but like her Catholic upbringing she just doesn't practise it anymore.... :D

Sorry maybe a bit rude, but I'm feeling good now that I have heard my song again and cyber hugging our Bucko for sending it to me.

Love and hugs Bucko

Miss Chatelaine is definitely the epitome of Kathy Dawn's repetoire.  I also think Summerfling was one of the best songs for a sunny day, classic pop : http://youtube.com/watch?v=ebw166fcQGI

If you haven't seen it, she does a number in The Black Dahlia.  Not a bad movie, a touch gruseome though.
