2007 Goal
« on: December 29, 2006, 11:23:03 AM »
My counts didn't end the year exactly how I had wished for so I have a lot of work to do in 2007. I've been undetectable since Nov 2005 which is good but I need to get my T-cells over 200 so I can get off Mepron once and for all. Here are may latest numbers. My T-cells only increased by 1 and my percentage dropped.
Sep-06    181    12.9%
Dec-06    182    10.7%

Around January 10th I'll be starting a 6 month vision therapy. The therapy is done on equipment that will be sent to me at home and consists of two 30 minute sessions 6 days a week. It is basically repetitive visual field tests targeting the areas of vision loss. Hopefully the therapy will re-stimulate the nerves and improve my vision enough to allow me to get my drivers license again after July as long as I remain seizure free. Besides my vision I need to be seizure free for 2 years and that will happen in July. Maybe in the New Year I'll even be able to cut grass again.
In 2006 my PML has gone into remission,I've walked the dogs,Put the wheelchair in storage, walked without a cane, used the vacuum and mopped.
I'm hoping for continued improvement in 2007.

Love
Jeff

Jeff,
Good news on the PML in remission and that the wheelchair is in storage.  That all sounds like progress.  I'm sure you would love to see the CD4 higher but it sounds like you have made a lot of progress.  Sometimes we have a tendency to look only at the moment and not see how far we have come. It sounds like you have come quite a ways.  Best wishes for 2007 and I hope the vision therapy is successful and you can get your license back!

Happy New Year Jeff.

Yes, I would say 2006 was a good year for you.  YOu put the WC away, you're walking the dogs and cleaning up the house (well, I guess that's good.  I hate cleaning but we all have to do it.)

The t-cell goal seems pretty easy but I know it's a tough hurdle.  A good friend of mine was like you and after 3 years just could not get over the "hump" (200 t-cells).  Let me tell you what he did.  Working closely with his Dr, they decided to drop the Bactrim even though he was still below 200.  After 3 months his t-cells finally hit the target and he's been adding more (albeit slowly) ever since.  I'm just saying.

Good luck with the vision thing.

Happy New Year.

hey Jeff,

Keep on keeping on. Here's to 2007 and continued improvement.
Have you considered Selenium supplements to help boost your cd4 counts? There was some research presented at the Toronto conference that showed HAART + selenium resulted in a larger increase in cd4 than HAART alone in people with sever immune suppression.
I've included a link to the abstract of the paper http://www.aids2006.org/PAG/Abstracts.aspx?AID=454
From memory the supplementation was 200mcg a day, but i'll track it down for you.

Hey Jeff.  Thanks for the update which reminds us all to keep perspective.  You certainly seem to have drive which if fantastic, to keep up with the vision work, to have made progress on mobility and even mopping.  All my encouragement and support toward your goals of 2007!  Best, Win

Jeff,

It's been a pleasure - and an honour too - to watch your progress. I'm so glad you share with us and I'll be keeping an eye out for your "I cut the grass!" post. :)

I hope your T-cells get with the program in 2007 and follow your example. Good luck! ;)

Hugs,
Ann

Believe it or not besides work and driving, cutting the grass is one of the things I miss doing most. We bought this house with the big yard partly because of my joy of.  landscaping. I burn in the summer but I can lose myself in the yard during the summer.

and cleaning up the house (well, I guess that's good.  I hate cleaning but we all have to do it.)

I know it's not the most glorious thing to be doing but anything I can do again to help around the house means so much to me. Makes me feel like I'm contributing again.  :)

I like that, too!  Great way to keep some color & get a little extra exercise!  And, child- I LOVE to clean and organize.  I'm just this side of saying that I find the scent of Pine-Sol to be a turn on!  LOL

And let me say that your progress this past year is probably a bit like a tan...often easier for others to see on you than it is to see on yourself.  From my view, it looks like you've done quite a lot.  And, like a tan, I'm sure you are wearing it well.

To 2007!

The NovaVision equipment arrived last Thursday and I started my twice a day treatments the same day. Therapy is 6 days a week so I've decided to make Sundays my day off so it won't interfare with our running around and shopping(at Target) day. Family and friends have already asked if I've noticed anything and I struggle to hold back the laughs. Through therapy hopefully the sessions will re-stimulate the brain and nerves to restore some of my vision loss due to the PML. It could take months and there's even a chance it won't help but atleast I know I tried in the end. Here's a picture of the equipment. Basically there's a place for my chin and once in place I watch a fixed spot on the computer monitor and click the mouse when I see color change in the fixed spot or a white square anywhere on the screen.
