How do things work here?
« on: December 23, 2006, 07:29:23 AM »
Okay since the upgrade my spellcheck doesn't work- I know it seems I never used it anyway. I notice when I was searching a post I replied to that also has bugs. looking for a reply I made I only get two pages and don't get all of my posts.
If I go to advance search I have to know the exact title of the thread- as if I am going to remember something 5 months back.
Am I on the only one?

Hi Johnny,

It may help Peter if you let us know what OS you are running. I'm on a PC with Windows XP and Explorer 6 - haven't upgraded to IE 7 yet. I haven't had any problems.

Now that would help, I am on a mac osx 3.9. I notice when I use both spell checks the am one does nothing and the one on my mac is light grey- again no good. Sometimes I can reclick a few times and then I can get the spell check going.

As for search,  I was looking for a response i posted to in Oct. So I put my name in and I got only 2 pages, but I notice there is no rational to the relevance. It isn't timelined. Some of the results aren't even from me but others using ali name,  so the two pages are missing something. Is this a result of some preference i unwittingly chose?
Cheers

hi johnny.

well i think mu spell chk and personal history work OK. As you can  see, I'm not very god at spelling and it corrected my mistakes.

Also my personal histry went back 6 pages to June, 1.

(Notice the spellcheck did not catch "my" or "check" or "god" or "history")

My computer is the same as Ann's... a PC with XP and Explorer.  No upgrades if I can help it.

robert

ps...here is my original post with the incorrect spellings.  I highlighted the words that were corrected and underlined that that the spellcheck didn't check.

hi johnny.

well i hink mu spll chk and personal history work OK. As yu can se, I'm not veri god at speling and it corected my mistaks.

Also my personl histry went back 6 pages to June, 1.

My computr is the same as Anne's... a pc with XP amd Explrer.  No upgrades if I can help it.

I have to disagree. The spell check works for me, and I am on a Mac. It is OS 10. The first few days after the upgrade, it did not work, but it does now.

The only problem I have had is freezing when I try to click on a thread with a lot of replies. I use Firefox for the internet, and have to close it, and reopen it.

Johnny,

You may have better luck finding one of your own posts if you click on the "show own posts" link under your name at the top of the left-hand column.

Latest version of Mac Safari v 2.0.4 spell check does not work.

Firefox v 2.0 spell check is now working but system freezes all the time when post are long and I think when there are a lot of pictures on them for some reason.

Overall I do have highspeed connection and I don't think that I am making this up (comparing other sites) when saying that, ever since the upgrade I found this site to be working at a slower pace.

I love it when users of software OTHER than Microsoft have problems... makes me say nah, nah, nah, nah, nah... especially those with Macs!  ;D   I run WinXP SP2, all updates, IE6, and the spell checker works for me. A lot of times it does find mistakes in words that are spelled correctly (false positives?), but tends to be fairly decent overall.

Except for HIV we are virus free- I don't know why but maybe because of Peter's thread I don't trust the am spell check- when all else fails there is Merriam Webster!

Ann can we get the search to work like the "Show own posts"- where it has logic.  I don't understand the properties of"relevance ". If I put my name in I get a post from November , than December, I could understand if the more posts to a thread would make it more relevant , or like "Show own posts" where you can find things chronologically. It is like search just throws out two pages of posts and omits some even in that time frame.
I can get 5 pages of Mouse if I search his threads, Something for the New Years resolution me thinks!
Safari spell check came through! Now I can take off my Smith's c.d.'s ! Yeah
Cheers

I also Have XP sp/2, with Internet Explorer 7... And have no problems. I did have a little problem, after first installing IE-7 but things have been great since.

Johnny,

If you click on the following link, you may get some answers. This site is pretty good, and I thought I had seen a topic or two regarding Spell check errors. If you want to ask a question on those forums, you will have to register first.
