vacation suggestions, please?
« on: December 14, 2006, 09:16:54 PM »
I'm off the week between Presidents b'days in February. I haven't been away (except family stuff) in over a year.
Any other time, a single gay man alone, Ft Lauderdale or South Beach (prefer South Beach). Now, a single gay man with HIV, alone, who's main purpose won't be looking for sex. I still want the sun and sand (or pool), and gayness. Main issue with being alone is dinnertime (SoBe is perfect for that).

I'm not looking for the vacation of lifetime, no expense spared. Just a decently good time and a suntan.

Anyone have any suggestions/experience? Need to start booking. Thanks

Hey Paul...

A good suggestion would be to go to: http://www.palm-springs.org/ Yes, lovely Palm Springs, California.

Also, you may want to check with "Dennis" and see what he may have for a good vacation getaway as a suggestion.

If you're looking for a domestic spot I agree the Palm Springs area is a great choice in February.  Has a lot to offfer gay and otherwise and it's a pretty quick trip to the coast for some beach fun.

Used to live and work in Palm Desert and thought it was a great place.
And I wished for guidance, and I wished for peace
I could see the lightning; somewhere in the east
And I wished for affection, and I wished for calm

How about :

http://www.suncoastresort.com/

http://www.suncoastresort.com/Directions/Directions.html

I've never been there, but I haver heard people say that it is pretty nice. Certainly not all that expensive either. Of course, if you want to pay more....Clearwater Beach. A hotel room right on the beach.

http://www.google.com/maps?hl=en&lr=&q=beach+hotels&near=Clearwater,+FL&sa=X&oi=local&ct=title

Plenty of sand and sun. Even still February, can be a little chilly, but Sunny. The Gulf will be too cold too swim in, but some may take the plunge !! :o

Also, plenty of restaurants in the immediate area. No gay bars on Clearwater beach, got to come across to Clearwater, for the only gay Bar ( about a two mile drive)

http://www.proshoppub.us/

Very friendly bar....

And of course Busch Gardens (Tampa) About twenty mile drive from Clearwater :

A nice full day of outdoor roaming around ( great roller coasters)) !! I think its about 65.00 admission now. I remember when it was 18.00 !! :o

Far North Queensland (Australia) - good mainland beaches and many tropical islands off Queensland coast
Byron Bay (New South Wales - Australia)
South West Rocks (as above)- near another incredible place called Hat Head - my favorite beach in the world! PARADISE  ;D

Paul, we are forgetting about the sun and sand of Provincetown. :) The entirety of the National Seashore, trust me, would be yours for the walking.  Sun? Yes, thanks to our being out here in the middle of the ocean.  And no problems about eating alone.  You might find a restaurant which has not closed for the season.  You might find a guesthouse, ditto.  I do know that our a.s.o. serves lunch Monday-Friday.  Win

funny you should mention dinner out  that's my downer about traveling alone - sushi bars and places with out dorr seating are good for that  prob your easiest getaways would be the Florida thing   Key West is fun and has lotsa touristy things to do (Hemmingway House, Atocha Museum, butterfly conservatory, the wacky graves in the city cemetery, etc)  Fun bars and lotsa drag.  Also, if the weather's permitting, don't miss splurging on a boat ride with lunch and snorkeling out to Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas - that was so beautiful.  I prefer Key West to mainland Florida because it's so quirky, tropical and unique.  Incicdentally if your not into the sex thing this time around, avoid Island House - been there, and it's kinda set up for naughtiness.   ;D

Paul,

You're in luck!!  Mardi Gras is Feb. 20, 2007 (P.D. is 2/19) and if you book early you can get decent rates.  You can get a marvelous suntan in New Orleans if you wear a speedo all day and if the weather cooperates you won't freeze your ass off!  No need to worry about eating alone as it's almost impossible to find a place to eat, period.

If my guest bedroom is unoccupied (and you can stand the messy hovel with 12 cats and 4 dogs I call home) you're more than welcome to stay with me.  My house is 2 blocks from St. Charles Avenue (a major parade route) and it's a quick taxi ride to the French Quarter.

wow, thanks everyone for some very interesting  suggestions! Even you, Jack!
Special thanks for the personal invites, but i need sunshine and warmth!! Since Dx, i haven't spent a day just enjoying the sunshine and I'm whiter  than white! I've got some research to do on some of these suggestions.

Key West is up there on the list. Now just because i may not want to participate, doesn't mean I can't watch?~ ;) If only the guys on island Houses website were checked in when i am.....
I was there once for a few days in the 90's with Bf, and loved it. Also, my favorite drag performer , Porsche, works there during the winters, and she knows my status, so i'd have someone i know to hang with a little.

We're actually going to be in Key West for New Years week so if theres anything really outstanding Ill be sure to let you know, I can reccomend several good restaraunts and some fun activities we've done in the past  :
a sailing trip on Blue Q , A Gay Owned and Operated sailing charter for Gay folks.. the sunset sail is romantic and beautiful and snorkeling trips are usually pretty good although it can be chilly this time of year.

The Day Trip to Dry Tortugas National Park has been mentioned but is worth mentioning again. an Unbelievable island Fortress and a piece of History most people have never heard of..

The Atocha Museum is pretty good, and the Hemingway House is a Manditory Key West trip ( make sure to take the Guided tour )

Unless youre a serious Jimmy Buffet Fan, skip Margaritaville . The Drinks suck, and the food sucks worse...hit the gift shop for some souvineers if you must.

LeatherMaster is a fairly good leather, sextoy and gay DVD shop..

Atlantic Shores has a clothing optional outdoor bar that can be interisting

The Butterfly Museum is beautifull and the Gift shop is Great !!

While youre in the neighborhood, go to the Chicken Store... just go..its unique to say the least.

and dont miss Alices restaraunt. My favorite ! but Marquessa is considered by alot of folks to be the best place for upscale dining.   My Blue Heaven is a neat little spot, if you dont mind sharing your meal with some chickens in the courtyard.

One place we Haven't explored is a place that supposadly has a clothing optional rooftop bar ??  anyone know about this ??  Ill be sure to check things out.. as a service to anyone considering a KW vacation ofcourse. .. 8)

I like jaunts to Puerto Rico.  I always stay here:  http://www.numero1guesthouse.com/

It's "gay friendly" but not gay.  RIGHT on the beach, and the non-touristy beach of San Juan... but a close 5-min taxi ride to clubs.  I used to go yearly but haven't done so for a while, mostly because my ex-boyfriend forbid my annual sexual forays to Carribean islands.  Santo Domingo's another "experience" but I prayed to God when the plane departed the tarmac that I would never, ever return because I felt simply SO bad exploiting all the extra large uncut cocks.

If I want a shopping jaunt I go to London and leech off the services of my ex-Nigerian boyfriend.  He always wants to fist me though so that can be problematic.  ADORE Harvey-Nichols and pretending I'm Patsy Stone.

In the past year I went to Iceland and would *SO* recommend it to everyone.  Easy flight from the east coast though it's rather expensive once you're there.  Phenomenal landscapes and fabulous picture taking ensued.  Last month was Greece and Turkey, also fab.  All the men were *very* my type... dark haired, dark complexion, ample facial hair = heaven.

palm springs..still gets to 75-80, but that is our rainy season so may not be good. but they do have tons of gay, clothing optional, resorts.

for sunny in Feb, maybe bahamas, puerto rico (cheap i think)

i planning either Australia or Brazil/peru in feb.  although those times are gay pride and carnival respectively. could be fun, but def no relaxing.

It's gotta be Sydney in February.
It's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Season. The weather is hot and humid, the beaches are great, and lots of lovely boys/men to look at.

I've been to Key West a couple of times and it's beautiful! One time we rented a house boat, it was great and I would love to do it again. I actually have an emerald from the Atocha. It was bought at an auction or something. The Mel Fisher Museum is absolutely wonderful. Mel Fisher found the Atocha ship wreck, a must see I think. For such a small island there is a lot to do, I wish I could go again. Have fun wherever you choose.
