Being bored at work...
« on: December 01, 2006, 04:26:41 PM »
... I looked this old PSA up on Youtube.

Is it just me, or does it seem like that they're trying to sell me on the glory that is "VD?"  They make it seem so nice.

Catchy tune!

Two notices:  the guy on the beach with the kid is HOT, and the guy right after almost looks like Rudy G. for a sec.

Due to both of those things...yes, they kinda do sell me on VD.

One has to understand the historical context of the PSA, although it seems to me attitudes and conceptions haven't improved much in the ensuing 30+ years.  In the early/mid 20th century VD was commonly viewed as a disease of the poor, the promiscuous, and all those other socially unacceptable types.  The idea was to contradict this fallacy.

One could change the lyrics to "HIV is for everybody" and play the same PSA today.  How many people still fall into the trap of "s/he couldn't possibly be HIV+?"

I know, and you are completely correct... however, like with most things in the PSA/After School Special genre... I think they overshot a smidge.

Plus, listening to a woman sing in tones generally reserved for dying vacuum cleaners about "VEEEEE-DEEEEE" is hilarious.

I agree on both points, which are just two more reasons I stopped watching television years ago.  Based on the infrequent instances TV is inflicted on me, I have no regrets.
