This article is too long to cut and paste, the short story is that they combined inactivated SIV with bacteria that binds to dendritic cells, and tested administration of the vaccine orally, vaginally, and rectally.  The oral vaccine worked in all monkeys over a number of years.  The study concludes that this "shows that this vaccine could work both as a sterilising vaccine that prevents infection altogether, and as a therapeutic vaccine that rapidly suppresses viral replication in those already infected."

With some caution that we know not all animal trials translate to human success, this study is definatley worth the read.

After reading this a second time it really strikes me in a few ways.

The first is in how little we know about our immune system and the recent understanding of the Treg cells (assuming that finding translates to humans).  It seems like this study provides some additional insight into the importance and process of the Treg cells.

Second, is how important our gut is to our immune system and how it seems most vaccines have been administered through the circulatory system rather than directly to the digestive system.  I would think that the Sumagen (and other) vaccine researchers would be looking at this finding and considering oral delivery with their vaccine.

Third is just how out of the box this is - from the concept of driving immune tolerance rather than immune activation, to testing an oral delivery method.  It strikes me that it is a French/Chinese team, who I am assuming received funding from their governments and not the US. It makes me wonder if the US funding process has a bias against these outside the box ideas.

This article provides a very good cautionary disclaimer that HIV in real life has much more variability than the SIV used in the lab -- and therefore the results really may not translate to humans. This still seems like really cool science and hopefully some of the concepts help advance the work towards a vaccine.

LOL..

to bad this can only be done as preventive stuff.
Not much for us that has develop antibody to the virus and attack it, instead of considered it as a harmless virus.

This is why perhaps the drugs that use for organ transplant, and reumatic (auranofin), and also IVIG (for autoimmune dissease) was able to decrease viral reservoir. They all works by lowering immune defense system to attack.

Maybe the theraphy that use to treat pollen n grass alergy can be effective.
If It can stop the system recognizing pollen n grass protein as an invader, it might works for HIV.
And can be done simply by put P24 protein under your tongue every day or weeks.

Just an opinion.

blueberries it is then for you...as long as they wash down your meds.  Perhaps you will be able to enjoy the blueberries by themselves (or at least with a blueberry colored, flavored, textured, and priced pill) before 2044.  But for today, savor your blueberries!

Here is a brief, easy to read, article on this same study from the Washington Post:

http://tinyurl.com/o2q93ax

The article notes that human trials will start in February or March - which seems like lightning speed, although they also note the findings were originally reported in 2012.

Great article, Jmarksto.  Thanks for posting.  Also interesting -- and awesome -- that Picker is going into clinical trials in 2015.   I'm going to drive up to Oregon (from Berkeley) and get my shot!

Altough its probably wont cure, but rather protects from infection, its still awsomeeeeee......
So simple and probably cheap. And thats why the impact would be HUGEEEE

My understanding is that if the "vaccine" works, its use could also be the basis of a "functional" cure for those already infected (as mentioned in the WP story).  Also, here's language from the source document:

"...The induction of this new class of CD8+ T-regulatory cells could also possibly be used therapeutically for suppressing HIV replication in infected patients and this novel tolerogenic vaccine paradigm may have potential applications for treating a wide range of immune disorders and is likely to may have profound implications across immunology generally."

So, if it works, it can be very helpful to those already infected, not just those who have not.  Am I reading this correctly?

Yeah...we dont know that for now. Theres a big probability.
But probably vaccine goes first, since theres already data on that.

Great news! :)

EDIT:  just read some of the article leading up to the mentioning of Lactobacillus rhamnosus  and Lactobacillus plantarum.  It so happens that both pro-biotic pills i take infrequently have those Pro-biotic strains in them.

I was thinking about the contrast in the approaches of Picker vs.  Andrieu.

Picker's HIV/CMV hybrid will give you a persistent virus that is so close to HIV that your T-Cells will be constantly on guard.

Andrieu takes the completely opposite approach -- he's working to keep your T-Cells suppressed in the presence of HIV so they can't attach to them and replicate.

Both of these approaches seem so different and so brilliant.   Let's hope one of them works! :)

Needs to pass phase I safety study first.

In London 2006, 6 HEALTHY volunteers had multi-organ failure and almost died when given an experimental drug to treat autoimmune disease and leukemia. It was a drug that messed with the immune system.

In 1999, Gelsinger became a victim of a gene therapy trial using an adenovirus.

Before any one talks of injecting new viral vectors into us, especially any agents messing with the immune system, show me safety data first.

Our systems are already trashed enough.

I think this is alot more simple and safer than that.
Since no injection. No virus used (only bacteria).
And all the three bacteria was already proven save.
I got the BCG vaccine when i was a kid. Then the other two was yogurt bacteria.

You basically can even do half of it @home now with yogurt and some dudes cum.

I was responding to geobee's comment on Picker's concept. They and many others are using modified viruses, which if I find potentially dangerous.

As for the Jmarksto's trial, I see that they are moving forward with human trials.

Begs the question: Have they seen this effect in serodiscordant couples not using barrier protection? The PARTNER subjects would be a good place to look.

... They used inactivated SIV. Don't think the HIV would be inactivated.

Also sounds like a bad pr0n fetish. :-\  Not sure who'd find it more fun. The donor or the recipient. :P
