TAMPA --

A Bay area man said a church canceled his husband's funeral once he found out he was gay.

Julion Evans died from a rare disease called amyloidosis.

The family said they arranged to have his funeral at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Tampa. But just before the funeral, the family said the pastor called to say they couldn't hold services there because Julion was gay and it would be blasphemy.

The family said the last minute change really sent them scrambling.

"I just felt like the church let us down during our time of need, and that's what they're there for, they're supposed to help you," said Julion's husband Kendall Capers. "They're supposed to guide you and walk you through and they closed the door on us."

In the end, the family held the service at the funeral home where the wake was held.

Bay News 9 tried to contact the pastor of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Reverend T.W. Jenkins. He did not return our messages.

I saw this on FB.  Very sad.  It is one thing for a church to refuse to perform same-sex marriages, but a funeral is sooo wrong.  This family had to scramble and many missed the funeral, because they didn't learn of the new location.

The church should make a list of the "sins" of the dead, for which they will refuse funeral ceremonies.  I imagine since homosexuality is THE only "sin," it will just contain that.

I don't understand why this still surprises anyone.  I also don't understand how anyone can be part of any belief system that views them as inherently evil, by their very existance.

This is an evil awful situation for family and friends.

I don't recall anything like this happening to my gay family members and friends who have passed on and had funeral services at different churches.

The "un-christian" behavior of this group has been duly noted believe me.

Amen to this Brother K.

Gay christians get everything they deserve. Read the fine print. Why a fag would want to be a devil-dodger is beyond me, it's like a jew wanting to join the Klan.
