When is diarrhea a problem?
« on: May 20, 2014, 08:09:30 PM »
So today I ate at the Chinese buffet for lunch... probably a no no. But a few hours later (5), I got the runs.  :-\ I took my meds when I ate around 1:30, and the diahrreah hit around 6:30. Sorry if this is too much information, but I'm just wondering if I'm at risk for malabsorbtion of today's dose due to this bout of diarrhea.

I took some Imodium to calm things down a bit. That usually works.

I guess my question is, is todays dosage null and void due to this episode? I just want to know if I'm 'involuntarily' not being adherent.  :(

Thanks yal

I do not think you are in danger and I haven't ever heard of anyone that had a treatment failure from the occasional bout of diarrhea . Its safe to stop worrying over this .

Medication absorption is performed during its travels through the stomach and/or small intestines (depending on tablet enteric coating or delayed release, etc.. Diarrhea forms later in the large intestines, when it passes too quickly for the proper amount of water to be absorbed from the feces. Or something like that.

My first reaction to the question of when is diarrhea a problem was to reply when it reaches your shoe but I resisted until now .

I was going to post something similar this morning! Something along the lines of...

Q: When is diarrhea a problem?

A: When you can't spell it and resort to writing dire-rear, and/or when it makes your knickers stick to your ass cheeks, and/or when people start wrinkling their nose at you and moving away from you, and/or when you could bend over and hit a target several yards away. ;D

I thought Miss PeePee and Jefferina had it covered though, so I stayed out of it even though I'm a professional dire-rear expert.

Seriously though, the only time diarrhea really might be a problem regarding med absorption is when that med is given via a suppository. Any other meds (non-suppository meds) are going to be absorbed in your stomach and/or first few feet of your small intestines, long before diarrhea is an issue.

On a side note, I would probably stay away from Chinese buffet.  When I was in high school I worked at a Chinese restaurant and seen things that I didn't want to see going on with customer's left over rice and food.

I'm just saying.  I used to love to eat at this place, but after I started working there I gave it up.  I only worked there for 3 months, it wasn't a pleasant job to work at. To this day I can hardly go to a Chinese buffet.  haha

I didn't mean to gross anyone out, but Chinese seem to have a different take on left overs.  lol

The Vietnamese place on the corner has the same effect on me - and there is usually a line out the door.  Once bitten, twice shy .....never going there again.  I can't help but think that the line of people greedily trying to get their 'pot of whatever' are into some sort alternative purging or cleansing routine. Instead of caloric information, they should just list the expected pounds shed per dish.

when is it a problem?

when you shit yourself.

when you're sitting at the computer, it hits so hard and fast you don't make it all the way through the house and its exploding in your pants

its a problem at home. if that happens while you're out, well, good times

Or when you're sound asleep at 4am when it hits and sitting up to get out of bed translates to shitting up in bed. Unpleasant at the best of times, but horrifying when you're not alone.

:D  when it interrupts your love making.  The memories of the early 90's just came creeping back. ;)

If diarrhea was truly a major issue for absorption, those of us who suffered through mono therapy with continual leakage wouldn't be around.
