Just started meds.. possible chest infection coming
« on: April 24, 2014, 02:54:21 PM »
I've two weeks into starting meds with a relatively low CD4 count 230 approx. I am now getting a chesty cough, partly because I have recently quit smoking I can imagine but my father also has got a chest infection so its likely I am getting a virus. Should I act quickly to get antibiotics for this?

Making an appointment with the doctor next week anyway to monitor my progress (hoping for some good numbers!)

I would just follow up with your doctor next week unless you take a turn for the worse or get a fever . You are going to get sick like everybody else HIV or not ... and its rarely if ever going to have anything to do with HIV .

Welcome to the forum ! .

Antibiotics are not for viral infections

I would think it is safe to wait since you have a schedule appointment  Eric

I would treat your chest cold like any other. Whether you have HIV or not.  Congratulations on starting meds.

A respiratory infection is generally viral, not bacterial, so an anti-biotic is not what one uses. If you want to prevent it from getting worse, go to the drugstore and buy Mucinex-D (or equivalent store brand). You can supplement this with a cough syrup, just DO NOT double up on the ingredients already in Mucinex (I think it's guafasin (sp?) -- ask the pharmacist, they will know.

Also be sure to check your med info on what interacts/doesn't; from my general basic knowledge I think over the counter meds are generally a non issue (except for st. john's wart) but...better safe than sorry :)

But yea, unless your CD4's are at AIDS levels (below 200) it's nothing at all to worry about.

Best,

Welcome agree with the rest off the good folk , with one proviso if you have a change in your breathing ability , let the Doctor know.
