am i fine?
« on: March 26, 2014, 01:42:03 PM »
Hi All,
Iam a female and had unprotected vaginal sex on december 30 with a doctor-friend of mine ,whom i know for quite a long time.He didnt ejaculate into me..we had oral sex too and i know after reading Poz that oral sex is not a risk factor. Now,this is the first time i had unprotected vaginal sex with him.He is a reputed guy, family man and says he is 1000 percent safe.
The reason why i got paranaoid was - On the 9th january ,i got a high grade fever that lasted for exactly a day..My grandmum had it too before me,,so there is a possibility that i picked it from her,but not sure..Two days later i had this v.bad tiff with my parents, best friend and boss, lost my pet in an accident (very very bad phase i went through, couldnt sleep all night) was under major stress and got an eczemic rash on my neck(a small one, which went away on its own in a week)
I corelated the two after reading in the net and got paranoid that perhaps these are ARS symptoms.
my anxiety got bad day by day  although my health was totally fine. The doctor told me that the fever was in the neigborhood and the rash was a result of the stress and asked me to relax. But i didnt.I took the Alere Hiv 1 and 2 antibody pinprick test at 9weeks. Came Negative.Again took at 12 weeks.Came Negative.
Can i relax??How accurate are Pinprick alere tests?
Thank you so much.

Curiosity,

You are conclusively hiv negative and yes, the tests are accurate.

You need to learn from this and stop having unprotected intercourse with persons of unknown hiv status.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together.

To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv. Some of the other STIs can be present with no obvious symptoms, so the only way to know for sure is to test.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

Thanks Ann.
The mistake happened just this one time.i hardly ever have sex on a regular basis. But i understand that even one mistake can change  your life. And its defenitely not worth the anxiety that i went through in the last couple of months.i am not going to do this again..Even after i was shown that there is just one line on that Alere card and that it signifies Negative, iam totaly relaxed only now after you gave the confirmation.Thank you so much.

Curiosity,

You're welcome.

Always keep in mind that as a woman, and the receptive partner, you are more vulnerable than a man to any and all STIs. Whether starting a new relationship or just having a one-off, always insist on condom.

I suggest you always carry a few in your bag, in a protective pouch so they don't get damaged. Check the expiry date now and then too. Many men do not like to use condoms and will use the excuse that they don't have one - having your own removes that excuse.

If he refuses to use a condom - he ain't worth it. Don't be bullied or sweet-talked into letting  him go bare. Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Also, other STIs such as chlamydia and gonorrhea can be present with no obvious symptoms. If left untreated, they can cause scar tissue in women that leads to blocked fallopian tubes and infertility. A(nother) good reason to get regular, routine, complete sexual health check ups. If you didn't get a full STI screen when you did your hiv tests, I suggest you do so.

 :osHI Ann,
You had answered my query v.effectively but there is a mild confusion in my mind now.
I have lost lots of weight over the last two months without any workout or conscious dieting. I have  stopped milk consumption,though...I had also developed some tooth and gum problems which got ok after aggressive antibiotics.Today,it made me think whether the rapid alere tests (the pinprick ones that give you the result in 15mins based on single and twin lines)that i took at the 9th week and 12th weeks are competent enough or should i go in for the more comprehensive elisa and westernblot tests..
thank you so much for your time.
