Swollen Lymph node and night sweating
« on: March 07, 2014, 07:13:18 PM »
OK so going on 7 years positive in May. On Atripla have been undetectable for a few years now CD4 is at 600 and 31% doing great so I think...
As of February 11th I left for a Mexican Vacation and had a sore throat start had lost my voice felt yucky runny nose basic cold stuff for almost 7 days. Noticed in that time that one of my Lymph nodes on my Neck has become swollen noticeably. I am to remain here in Mexico until just after April 1st so holiday continues. It has been approximately 23 days with the swollen lymph node that with Advil or Ibuprofen the swelling of the node goes away for a few hours. Prior to this for the past couple years I do get periodic night sweats which I thought was a natural thing for people who are on antivirals and fighting HIV is this not correct??  So yes there are a few questions here number one is the swollen lymph node something I should cancel my vacation and head back to Canada... and also the night sweating is this not a common occurrence with people on meds fighting HIV?

Also here in Mexico it is fairly easy to get medications from a pharmacy is there any thing I should try??

Thank you so much a little paranoid here.

Did you talk to your Dr in Canada about the night sweats?  That can be a symptom of something else going on if your VL is still suppressed.

I'd go to a Dr in Mexico and get some basic blood work done (esp.with the very swollen Lymph nodes) and not try to self medicate in the pharmacies.  Most Dr's are reasonably priced, I've seen acute care places around different cities too.

Swelling of the lymph nodes during an infection it's normal ( in your case sore throat... fighting a cold). But if they don't go back to normal size after the infection that can be a problem.Swollen lymph node and nights sweat, not a good combination. Maybe your body is fighting a viral infection. To be on the safe side you should see a doctor as soon as possible.

Just to clarify the night sweats have been going on for a couple years now periodically. Like once or twice a week.
 - the Swollen Lymph node just for the past 23 days.

So is night sweats not a side effect of Atripla - and being HIV positive?
I never mentioned the night sweats as an issue to my ID Doctor as i just assumed HIV as an infection so I just assumed that would be something we as HIV positive people would always deal with.

Sorry just a little paranoid as I'm in Mexico and away from my doctor till April 1st.

A little update
Returned to Canada had my routine bloodwork done - everything came back good still undetectable CD4 at 580 37% -
Went in for an ultrasound of the lymphnodes on the neck turns out its four about 3-4cm in length apparently that's very swollen - now being scheduled for a biopsy.

Night sweats continue once a week or once every other week - have a continuous headache - feel cold alot - also pretty warn down tired often - check my temperature periodically and no fever.

Had a biopsy done on April 17th of the lymph nodes in the neck it was a very uncomfortable procedure it is now April 24th and still no results strangely the lymph nodes have decreased in swelling but still somewhat swollen. The cough continues and occasional fever of 38-39 Celsius.
This seems like such a long process.

OK So the Biopsy results have returned and the preliminary results show no Cancer in the swollen lymph nodes thank God. But now I am still stuck not knowing why I am dealing with these symptoms nightsweats, swollen lymph nodes, slight fever, headache, fatigue, cough, the unexplained weight loss, itchiness and breakout of hives that come and go. Most of theses symptoms have improved or gone away. Other then the Nightsweats which remain the nodes have shrunk but not completely  the hives continue and I have gained some of that weight back.
Anyone have any idea what else could possibly be going on?

I was concerned back when you were in Mexico, I'm glad to hear it's not cancer.  But I have no idea what's going on.  Are the doctors going to do more tests?  Hopefully with the swelling going down everything else will continue to improve too...

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma symptoms may include:

Swollen lymph nodes in your neck, armpits or groin
    Abdominal pain or swelling
Chest pain, coughing or trouble breathing
    Fatigue
    Fever
    Night sweats
    Weight loss

My lymph node in my jaw swole up so I had been doing a lot of research on lymph nodes.  I'm not sure if your biopsy confirms that its not this but it seems you listed all the symptoms.  Mine seems to have gone away on its own in a couple days....but if you Might want to ask your doctor more about it if the symptoms continue?

Why are grouping these two symptoms together?

You said you have had night sweats for years.  So why now that you have one swollen lymph node are you assuming they are related?

They ruled out cancer.

Well actually they said that the sample that was given was very small and that it was reactive but that it was benign in the preliminary results. But have suggested a larger sample be taken today in the final results.
The reason I keep going back to these nightsweats is that I never thought they where an issue. I thought nightsweats where a symptom of infection or a side effect of the Atripla, So I never felt it important to mention to my Doctor.
Nobody has been able to clarify that nightsweats is a symptom of either -

So does anyone have nightsweats as a side effect of taking atripla? Also Nightsweat have become more common since the swollen lymphnodes.

I had night sweats while on Atripla but the important thing is you are going to continue working with your doctor and find out a definitive diagnosis .

When I was in my late 20's, early 30's... when the HIV epidemic was in full swing, I developed really bad night sweats.  I thought I must be infected, but kept testing negative.   I do remember completely soaking the bed to the point where I would regularly switch sides during the night to move to the dry side.  Sometimes I would put down towels to sleep on.

I don't recall the exact frequency, but it was at least twice weekly.  I think they lasted over a year, maybe two.  Then just stopped as mysteriously as they started.  Never had it investigated as I hate going to the doctor.

Since then I had only one night sweat and that was after a bout of hard drinking after I had been infected with HIV, but before starting meds.  My TCell count was around 200 at that time.

I've also had a couple bouts of swollen lymph nodes in my neck.  In both cases, once the node pressed against my voice box, I went to the doc.  A round of antibiotics took care of it.  I was sexually active then (years ago), so I'm pretty sure it was something I picked up from oral sex.

So after what seemed a very long process the results of my second biopsy have returned and it turns out it is in fact Hodgkins Lymphoma.  I feel very optimistic and am ready to take on this next battle. Next step Docs have decided to go at this with Chemo and radiation.
Wish my luck guys.

I'm so sorry to hear this turned out to be Hodgkins Lymphoma.  The good news is that Hodgkins Lymphoma is very beatable.  Some of our members here have successfully battled it.  I myself am battling Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, and I am very encouraged by my progress.

Stay strong!

Have you started taking chemo at this point?  ABVD?

The good news is that you have a diagnosis and now can proceed with appropriate treatment.  You will find the strength to 'fight' this and please know that the odds are in your favor of actually beating it.

I will pm you my phone number if you ever want to chat about this.

Thanks James got your message funny I was just messaging you about the ABVD.

So Chemo and radiation is the direction my Oncologist wants to go with this. Have to still do a PETScan. I do feel very positive about the whole thing just sucks though.

PETscan results came back and the Cancer is in only the one area of the body. So should be starting Chemo and Radiation fairly soon - surprised how slow this entire process has been but thankful that this will soon be history. So the cough has been terrible have been taking a prescription strength cough syrup that makes me sleep amazingly :) but I find that my energy is really in the decline.
