religion question
« on: March 17, 2014, 10:31:04 AM »
Is anyone on here Islamic or familiar with the Islamic faith?

One of my assigments for my religion class is to attend a church service of a faith not my own.

For me that leaves out Methodist, Amish, Mennonite, Brethern in Christ, Catholic (attended some when I was married) or Baptist (I was baptized in a Baptist church), and Quaker is out since it is considered part of the anabaptist.

So I am going to attend an Islamic church with one of the girls in my class. In exchange she will attend one of the churches I go to.  I'll give her the choice of St. Johns United Methodist or the church that I attend sometimes that my daddy goes to.

My question is: do I have to wear a head covering when I attend her church (I apologize if church is the wrong word)?  If so what do I get, can I just go to
Lord and Taylors and pick up a pretty scarf or is there a religious shop that I go to?

She's not going to be in class until next tuesday and I forgot to ask her last class and I have to pick something up this weekend if I am supposed to wear one.

I would think if you are going to a service in a mosque you will need a head scarf . I suggest you search Google for some pics of suitable ideas that wont cost allot .

I have no personal experience with Islam and only know what I have read and from chatting with people online. This article gives the basics on how to visit a mosque. Post back and let us know how it went.

Good suggestions above.

I remember years ago when I first started at the university, our class visited a Mosque as part of our religion course.  It was quite interesting.

Hello Michelle,

I am not Muslim, so I don't know how it would really go. But do you already know which mosque you'll attend the ceremony at?

If yes, maybe you can simply contact them directly and ask them over the phone what would be best, explaining your case (visiting/observing for a class, not Muslim yourself, but not wanting to be disrespectful in practices, etc.). I'm sure they'll be able to tell you what you should/shouldn't be doing, and what you don't need to do as a visitor.

I'm also pretty sure it's best to ask directly, because there might be differences in practices from mosque to mosque/affiliation to affiliation.

Hope you learn a lot. It sounds like a cool activity for your class. :)
