Am I infected and how good are these results?
« on: December 15, 2013, 08:06:21 PM »
Hello I had gay sex with a male and I was the bottom partner and we did use condoms and the condoms covered about half his penis which has me scared that i could get hiv. Also another condom slipped as he withdrew and it was hanging out of me and he took it off and disposed of it and this has me scared as well. I took a hiv duo combination test at almost 3 weeks(20 days) and it came back negative and my partner tested in front of me with an oraquick at home test at 6 weeks after our encounter and it was negative. I will get a conclusive test at 3 months but i just want to know how reliable are these tests and how likely is it that i might be positive at 3 months?

You never had an exposure by losing it on withdraw. The next you have anal sex have your partner hold onto the condom on withdrawing.

The bottom line is you didn't have a risk as Rod pointed out . You can never trust a HIV test unless the person taking it hasn't had an exposure in the last three months .

The oraquick test your partner took is a very effective test for that point in time so the good news is really the fact you do not have to trust his test since you didn't have a risk in the first place .

ALTHOUGH YOU DO NOT NEED HIV TESTING AT THIS TIME for this incident , anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than HIV. Some of the other STDs can be present with no obvious symptoms, so the only way to know for sure is to test.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid HIV infection. It really is that simple!

I appreciate both of your answers and the reason that I am worried about hiv is because I have been having weird symptoms for about 5 weeks already which are like things moving in my body, head throbbing, stomach rumbling and they havent gone away in 5 weeks and that is why Im worried. I know that I did use condoms but these symptoms are unexplainable. That is why I am getting tested. Jeff G so are you saying that a negative result on this test means nothing? I thought that most people showed positive on antibody tests between 4-6 weeks and that 3 months was just being conservative by the manufacturer. Also do you think a duo combination test at 3 weeks is a good indication?

The average time to seroconversion is 22 days. Most who are infected will test positive by 6 weeks. For various reasons a small number will take longer and that is why we follow the CDC recommendation to test at 3 months for a conclusive negative result.

What I'm saying is YOU DID NOT HAVE A RISK and do not need to test over this specific incident . I was letting you know for future reference that because of window periods the only HIV test that matters is your own . There are no shortcuts to testing and the all test must be confirmed at 3 months .

We do not discuss symptoms because they are not specific to HIV . If you are sick go see your doctor because its not HIV .

This is my last post jeff as the site only allows 3 free posts. So would you say if my partner tested negative at 6 weeks with that test, then it is very unlikely that he has HIV. I also agree that my risk was minimal but what makes me test is these symptoms that im having.  Also can you please tell me if the duo at 3 weeks(20 days) is a good indication as my counselor said it was 99 percent accurate even at 3 weeks. I appreciate all your advice jeff and hopefully my problem is not HIV. Also I want you to see this url: http://www.medhelp.org/posts/HIV---Prevention/What-are-my-odds-of-being-HIV-positive/show/2059992

Do you agree with this?

You never had an exposure and there are no tests marketed or sold to give a conclusive negative test earlier than 3 months post exposure.

Diego , you have been told here and on other sites that this was not a risk . If you cant accept our advise then go test at 3 months and be done it with it . HIV is not your problem .
