So Disappointed with This show

Episode 7 of season Ten "thriller" Greys Anatomy

If your not familiar with Greys Anatomy it's a medical drama on ABC.

The show I watched had to deal with a BITE from a drug addict.

Th Dr. Was bit and skin was broken, but not once did I PrEP or PEP.

She was worried she would have HIV/AIDS did a rapid test negative, was told she has to test again in 6 months, wouldn't that take her beyond the window period. Shouldn't a medical show do its research and know the appropriate timelines.

Then they shared a story with another Dr. She shared she was stuck with a needle in her palm, once again no mention of MEDS or options.

I guess what I'm getting at is that we already have it hard with Stigma and being treated at hospitals and the fact that this show is based on medicine wouldn't they have been more thorough with finding out about this stuff.

Marc, there's a major error with the story line from the get-go.

Getting bitten IS NOT a risk for hiv infection. Saliva isn't infectious. Not only is it not infectious, but it also contains over a dozen different proteins and enzymes that damage hiv and render it unable to infect.

Unless this guy was profusely bleeding from his mouth*, and he really gnawed away at her, there was no reason for her to even test for hiv, never mind get on PEP. *(I don't know, didn't see the episode, don't like the show)

And you are correct about the testing window period. It's been three months for at least a decade now.

Years ago CSI:NY did a story line over quite a few episodes about one of the investigators getting cut by a bloodied mirror. Same type of bullshit over a no risk situation. The producers asked us to host a forum to discuss the show - what a nightmare. The forum is still online, but only moderators can view it these days. At least I don't think anyone else can see it... http://forums.poz.com/index.php?board=18.0 ???

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

It was just bad, I know from reading the forums that a bite won't get it done. That's what pissed me off, a medical show should be out to get facts straight.

Sad but I guess it's the norm.

One thing I notice is how scripted and news television uses the term AIDS, when HIV is the term that would apply in the circumstance.  They will say so and so was infected with AIDS.

This actually happened to Mini. She was having a sedated MRI a few years back. After the procedure, Hubby and I went back to wake her up. A very worried anesthesiologist came walking in the room clutching his wrist. He was worried because as Mim was going under, she supposedly grabbed his wrist and scratched him. It didn't even break the skin!  It's what we call a "licky boo-boo" - lick your finger, run it across the scratch and the boo-boo disappears. Honestly I thought this man was going to pass out!

Hubby and I just kept starring at him and asking what he wanted us to do. Out of pure frustration and the need to get Mim out of there, I suggested that he contact Mim's PID and get started immediately on prep. Did he need it? Of course not. But let someone else tell him what an idiot he was being. He wasn't listening to me.

Sad thing about that episode - art imitates life.
