I slept with a known HIV positive person yesterday in my drunken state. The sex was protected and there was no condom failure as I checked the condom afterwards by filling up with water afterwards. My concern is that I had fresh wound in my inner thighs from falling earlier on, this wounds was on both sides and close to the groin. I am worried that her vaginal secretions might have come into contact with the cuts. Please advise me guys as I am thinking of taking PEP. Was I risk?

You have NOT had a risk for hiv infection and you certainly do NOT need PEP.

Condoms have been proven to prevent hiv infection. There have been three long-term studies of couples where one is positive and one is negative. In the couples who used condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, but no barrier for oral activities, not one of the negative partners became infected with hiv. Not one.

Vaginal fluids on the cuts on your legs is also NOT a risk for hiv infection.

Hiv is a fragile, difficult to transmit virus that is primarily transmitted INSIDE the human body, as in unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse where the virus never leaves the confines of the two bodies.

Once outside the body, small changes in temperature, and pH and moisture levels all quickly damage the virus and render it unable to infect. For this reason, getting vaginal fluids on your cuts is NOT a risk.

You say she is "a known HIV positive person" - if she is on meds with an undetectable viral load, this means there is pretty much no way you'd end up infected yourself due to contact with her. However, you didn't have a risk in this situation regardless of her viral load.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together.

To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

ALTHOUGH YOU DO NOT NEED TO TEST - AND YOU DO NOT NEED PEP - SPECIFICALLY OVER THIS NO RISK SITUATION, anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv. Some of the other STIs can be present with no obvious symptoms, so the only way to know for sure is to test.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

Thanks for your answer. The lady whom I slept with is HIV poz and she isn't on meds as her cd4 count is above 350. The cuts on my thighs that I was referring to were caused by being cut by palisade fencing which I was jumping over, a piece of my skin came off on both thighs. Would that change your assessment?. I am nervous as this is my last day to take PEP, if I have to. Thanks again.

This does not change anything . You did not have a risk and you do not need PEP for this no risk incident .

You never had an exposure.

HIV is unable to reproduce outside its living host (unlike many bacteria or fungi, which may do so under suitable conditions), except under laboratory conditions; therefore, it does not spread or maintain infectiousness outside its host.

HIV is transmitted by;
Unprotected penetrative anal and/or vaginal sex
Sharing works with other IV drug users
Mother to child

Fingering is NOT a risk for hiv infection. Not one person has ever been infected through fingering and you are not going to be the first.

Please re-read your entire thread. You have already been told how to protect yourself against hiv transmission.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!!!
