very scared of possible infection
« on: March 30, 2015, 12:29:05 PM »
Hey every one.
Well.. as do all the people here i am afraid going mad.
I am 26 straight male and had vaginal sex with a 37 year old women 2 weeks ago. Was heavily drunk, the condom aperantly broke.. we didnt notice it till we were done.. it might have been 20 hole minutes! I panicked.. to say the least.. asked her about her status she said she was good. Got back home.. but had a really bad feeling about it.. didnt trust her.. woke up in the morning and txtd her again.. she was shocked by how petrified i was... i tried to put this aside but couldnt.
A day later i summed up the courage and asked her to come with me for an hiv test.. she agreed. We took a test that shows you results within 30 minutes but the test is blind to the past 3 months. We both were negative (if to trust what she is saying since i wasnt allowed to view her results with her). After the test they send the blood to the hospital for a second test that shows 6 weeks back. Again negative ( and again if to trust what she was saying).
Then she told me "honestly i had unprotected sex with two guys in the past month and a half but calm down..!" This made everything worse.
I went back home and rushed to the ER where i was given pep 50 hours after possible exposure (truvada and kaletra). At that time i also remember checking my penis for scratches and found one small one healing.. i could barely breath.
8 days after possible exposure a lymph in my neck (back of the head, under my skull on the right side) got swollen.
3 days later both sides of my groin lymphs got swollen and a little open sore emerged on my penis.
Read about it a lot and found syphilis as something i might have. Got tested for std's yesterday waiting for results.
I am petrified.. especially after reading that a lot of people who get syphilis contract hiv along with it.
went to the doc.. said hes not sure this is syfilis and the blood work came out negative.. he did say i have something since my lymphs are swollen and i should do the blood tests for std's again in a month.
I am mentally broken.. can barely sleep, eat, think.
Please.. what are my chances? I am just about giving up. :(

OK, you need to take some real deep and slow breaths in and out. I'm not kidding. Do it right now and again everytime you start tensing up.

As to your situation, yes, having a condom break is a risk, but a very low level one, especially for the insertive partner. HIV is not easily transmitted and is significantly more difficult to transmit from female to male than the other way around.

Nothing you are reporting symptomatically is suggestive of HIV, but then neither the presence nor the absence of symptoms will ever tell you anything reliably about your HIV status.

Only an HIV test can give you that answer. You can test initially at 6 weeks after completing PEP. If that answer is negative, as I believe it is likely to be, then you will almost certainly test conclusively negative at 3 months.

Stop bothering the woman in question. You are responsible for your own health. And your fears notwithstanding I expect you to come out of this ok.

PEP has an excellent record at preventing infections and you started PEP within 72 hours of possible exposure.  Take your PEP as directed and you can test, 6 weeks AFTER you complete PEP.

I agree with Andy and I expect you to come out of this OK.

I understand, yet the web is not in my favor. I did discover a small scratch on my penis and did infact catch something from her due to swollen lymphs in my groin, i am still very scared... you think chances are still slim?

Listen, we have both already told you what we think. We appreciate that you are worried, but there's nothing more that we can add or say at this point. You have some waiting time to get through. During that time you need to make a real effort to focus on other things in your life. Don't bother saying you are too worried to do that, because that response is not going to fly here. Just do it.

And again and lastly, we expect you to come out of this ok. Now get on with your day.

You are confusing a possible STI with HIV and that is incorrect.  There are some STIs that are much easier to contract than HIV.  It sounds like you may have one and if so, it can be treated.

Take a deep breath, finish your PEP and test.

Anxiety and stress can cause various symptoms.  You will need to finish your PEP and then test.
