4TH Surgery in 8 months
« on: November 04, 2013, 07:00:25 PM »
So I'm getting admitted to the hospital tomorrow for surgery on my Gallbladder which in itself isn't bad, but my liver is also being infected they are going to check it out and see if anything needs to be done.

This year since being diagnosed this will be my fourth surgery and I have one more to go, so FIVE surgeries in less then a year I think that's a record and my insurance company must really despise me!

Wish me luck guys... Lord knows I'm going to need it!

I'm finally out of the hospital!

I'm ever so tired can't wait for thanksgiving.

Last surgery hopefully of my life in December and I can't wait for that to be over.

I was thinking if I should just ask my doctor to keep me put of work until my next surgery due to the stresses of having multiple surgeries done on my body and feeling mentally and physically exhausted. Wonder if she will grant that for me.

Great well done you.

You would certainly have that option here ( UK )

I love my flat like a living thing those first days out off hospital ,

Take care

marcmoral16, I sympathize with you on the mental toll of multiple surgeries. I had three surgeries (2 foot, 1 nasal) in a span of 8 months. Four months later a colonoscopy so yet more general anaesthesia, and then 11 months later yet a third foot surgery. I am now two months out past my last foot surgery.

I'm sorry that you find yourself in this position, truly -- and to read you have yet a fifth one yet to go next month. May I ask what your next surgery will be? Plus on top of all this you are dealing with a new diagnosis of HIV and all that entails physically and mentally.

I'm not sure if I am reading your most recent post in this thread correctly -- are you planning on returning to work briefly in-between this current surgery and the one in December but saying you don't wish to do so? If all of your surgical procedures have been major ones involving general anesthesia I don't see how anyone can expect to work in between them -- more minor surgeries are different but all of them vary of course.

Wishing you the best and speedy recoveries.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.  Just curious what types of surgeries and if they're HIV related?

Hi Miss Philicia and thank you!

My first surgery was for my tonsils and adenoids that's was general anesthesia.

In July I had surgery on my rectum for abnormal tissue.

In September I had the same surgery on my rectum.

In November had surgery on my gallbladder and my liver was inflamed so was my spleen.

Next is December 17th that is hopefully the last surgery on my rectum this one he's going for all the tissues one and done, and my job wants me to return to work. Not that I want to return to work it's like they are forcing me and my doctor isn't backing me up I have an appt with her the 18th I will plead my case to her.

These were all under general anesthesia and as you said dealing with my new diagnosis it's rough and I don't think they understand my pain and frustration.

I am sorry and angered that you have to plead your case with your Doctor. Do you have more than one Doctor who could help ? As Miss P states its not just the surgery in isolation , its what your whole year has been about. Its  a load and you need to be listened to , your Doctor needs to think fully about what your recovering from.
Good luck with it all

Theyer (and marmoral) I suppose it's all dependent on what the expected recovery time is per procedure, I really don't know. I just know with what I did the recovery time was long (not because of me but because of the procedure i.e. foot) and involved physical therapy.

If I had been employed during my foot surgeries I probably would have been expected to take 7-10 days off following surgery then go to work on crutches and/or work from home. And any time missed would have been deducted from accrued sick days or allotted vacation time, so I would have least not lost any income.

My nasal surgery would have had me take off at most five days. It all depends on the procedure of course.

I have had surgery on my rectum but I only had local anesthesia and a handful of stitches, and don't recall taking any time off from work (that was when I was employed, the other procedures occurred when I was on disability).

As far as the emotional toll, marmoral, perhaps you should have a discussion with your GP and/or HIV specialist on the 18th (if they continue not to back you up) about taking some kind of anti-anxiety medication if you have to return to work, emphasizing that it's not only the constant treadmill of surgery and requisite recovery but how it has coincided with a new diagnosis of HIV. Plus you are only 28 and (I assume) have little to no experience dealing with so many health issues, much less all at one time.

At any rate you have my utmost sympathies with this turn of events, and feel free to vent with me at any time. In due time this will all pass.

Soooo after talking with my PCP she advised my disabilty (job insurance) that I will not be working until January 2nd. I was an emotional wreck and just asked her to be in my shoes. She apologized and said that she would do what ever I needed to feel better.

Gave me all my documents and scripts and said enjoy my holiday season!

I was so relieved.

That is great news.  I am late reading your thread but please know I wish you the best in your current recovery effort as well as the one in December.  The job related stress should be alleviated a bit now and your focus of course should be on yourself right now.

Relax and take this down time as you certainly need it.

Well progress report on my laparoscopic gallbladder surgery I'm still in some pain. Had a post op 11/26 that was cancelled had another 12/5 cancelled finally saw a specialist 12/13 admitted me to ER for fever and belly pain. Waste of time because the Ultrasound department closed at 5 didn't get blood work back until 6. They wanted to do a CT scan but I convinced myself that I was fine no issues, and asked to be discharged. Staying for a CT SCAN would've had me there until 1am.

My final surgery is on Tuesday and they might keep me to run all test post surgery, don't know if that's a good thing or not. I will update once I find out more.

This is to hoping this is my FINAL surgery of my life! 2014 I'm ready!!!
