I will have to get tickets for the November 22nd showing here in Louisville.  I saw the one actor, who plays a woman, on Ellen.  Until I saw that interview, I didn't realize Matthew's character did not like gay men and blamed gays, at first, for his infection.  But, all that changed.

I like Matthew Mcaunaghey (it's that Texas swagger, he's delicious).

But I think I'm gonna pass on this, I'm feeling a little bit AIDS'd out.

Anyone seen it yet? Is it good? If it's a movie of hope, yep wanna see it. I am tired of seeing sad Aids movies where they completely focused on someone deteriorating. A movie that focuses more on hope, fun with friends e.t.c would be nice. Problem Hollywood tries to make everything shocking so they can win an oscar, but this looks good.

Actually the poster says it starts its limited release on November 1st. Fandango doesn't list it playing in Philadelphia until November 15th (Ritz East).

Well Missy, you best scan that invitation (after having it notarized) and post an image of it in this thread or we're all going to forever question your legitimacy on this forum.

"Instead, “Dallas Buyers Club” presents the fable of a homophobe’s awakening, with supporting roles given to Ms. Garner’s kind doctor and to Rayon (Jared Leto), a troubled transgender person who becomes Ron’s business partner. Mr. Leto is always a subtle and intriguing actor, but Rayon essentially revives the ancient stereotype of the tragic, self-destructive queen, suffering operatically and depending, at last, on the kindness of strangers."

It's playing in Philadelphia at the Ritz East downtown if anyone is interested. I haven't gone to see it yet myself. There are other things I want to see at the moment like "Blue is the Warmest Color" (but that's 3 hours and I might wait for Netflix where I can pause it) and 12 Years a Slave. Oh, and Gravity.

I went and saw the movie a week and half ago. My kids took me for my birthday. I enjoyed the film. As has been said in the press Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto both gave amazing performances.
It does put a face on AIDS in the 80's and the struggles that go with it. It does get emotional at times. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will probably go see it one more time while it is in theaters.
The movie highlights the pharmaceutical industry's attempt to exclude alternative and experimental treatments early in the epidemic. It shows Ron Woodruff's fight to have a say in what his treatment options are and what medications he wants to use.

By all means, see "Dallas Buyers Club" for the astounding award-worthy performances by Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, but please remember:  This is a fictionalized treatment of only one true story, and it is not by any means a definitive historical account of the AIDS buyers' clubs during the horror-filled, doom-laden, terrifying 1980s.  Indeed, it is not even the story of one of the most important, the most significant, the most long-lasting buyers' clubs of that period.

"Dallas Buyers Club" is not a documentary; nevertheless, a strong argument can be made--especially to those who were not around at that time or who do not know the history of that deadly decade--that the film is an example of heterosexual co-opting of historical gay activism and especially of gay AIDS activism. In point of fact, most such buyers' clubs were founded and operated by gay men, not by a homophobic straight redneck who nevertheless helped a bunch of frightened sissies who stayed in the background.  Most buyers' clubs were established as non-profits; Ron Woodroof (McConaughey's character) was in it for his own health, yes, but also for profit.  The Dallas Buyers Club was the only such club at the time which refused to sign on to the Fort Lauderdale Principles, which outlined in detail the ethical, moral, and financial imperatives of the movement.

The true heroes of this "underground" search--at a time when the medical and governmental authorities were woefully, even criminally, lackadaisical--to discover pharmaceuticals that would reduce viral load and increase CD4 counts, and, even more importantly in that grim time, medicines to cure the deadly opportunistic infections, were all gay men, such as Martin Delaney, Jim Corti, John James, Dr. Joe Sonnabend, Michael Callen, Derek Hodel. I, too, strongly recommend the book "Acceptable Risks," by Jonathan Kwitney, for a true history of the AIDS buyers' clubs movement.

For a much better, and more moving, critique of the position I've outlined here, please see this post, "Not Buying 'Dallas Buyers Club,'" by Patrick Mulcahey on Huffington Post:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/patrick-mulcahey/dallas-buyers-club_b_4262093.html

It is imperative we remember our true history, the history of AIDS, for Silence = Death.

I have read these criticisms a couple of times. But this film does not portray itself as an all encompassing history of buyers clubs or the aids epidemic. It is simply a story of one man, Ron Woodruff.
There are other movies out there that tell a lot more of the story of AIDS in its early days. Even those have critics because they missed this or that. This is but a very small paragraph in a very long novel.
I don't think it would be possible to make a movie about those days without leaving out something. There was so much going on.
Maybe because I have only been recently diagnosed and meds have always been available to me that I do not have a good perspective on all this. Like much of the rest of the world, during the 80's I was only vaguely aware of AID's. But that happened to someone else, and it was a world away from mine.

Abs, I moved your thread from Off Topic and merged it into an already existing thread about this movie in Living.

Off Topic is only for subjects that have nothing to do with hiv. That's why it's Off Topic ;) ;D

I haven't seen the movie yet and probably won't until it airs on a channel I get on Sky. I don't get any movie channels (other than Film4 and a few obscure ones that show ancient or made-for-telly flicks) so it might be a while. :-\

Amazingly, The Lonely Heart is premièring on Sky Atlantic tonight and I've got it set to record. I didn't think we'd get the premier for some time yet. :)

How do you know how deeply held is your family's stigma? Has your family ever had a family member with HIV and what was the reaction?  Sometimes people's tunes change when a topic really hits home.

I'm sure my family would be supportive, I just need to grow a pair and tell them, it just never seems like the right time. At the same time I don't know what I'm waiting for. It's just one of those leaps I need to make, I don't get why it was so easy to tell coworkers, and a 3 of my friends ( I don't really mean easy, just not as scary) I think it's because I have the possibility of denying it. Anyways I'm rambling.
