Lawrence Welk reruns
« on: October 24, 2006, 07:55:00 PM »
The PBS affiliate outta Albany, NY shows Lawrence Welk reruns.  Can you believe it?  They're so full of gender/racial stereotypes, not to mention the lamest music immaginable.  Who the hell watches this stuff?  My grandparents used to come over every Sunday night and it would be on the one TV in the house.  What torture!  My grandparents have been dead 30 years.  One would have thought all Larry's fans would be as dead as my grandparents are.  God, does nothing stilted and stupid ever go away?

My grandparents watched it 40 years ago, and sadly enough the old bags are still around to watch the reruns today!

Anna one, anna two . . .

Then he dances with some old bat in the audience with hair so gummed up with hair spray Katrina couldn't have budged it.

I didn't know they still showed that stuff.

The Simpsons it ain't.

The Tucson PBS affiliate also airs it.  It's nothing I care to watch personally...having viewed it a little while sometimes for amusement.

But this is all subjective isn't it...and if it's getting the ratings and has an audience...then it's fine by me.  There's plenty of stupid or moronic stuff on TV these days...so the Welk show is hardly the only one to hold that distinction.

There is an episode that makes it all worth while. An audience member dances a very vigorous polka with Lawrence or one of the other male members of the show. As she is twirled around the floor, enjoying herself immensely by the smile on her face, her perfectly coiffed hair, flies off her head. The wig goes in a different direction from the one she is dancing so she has to think fast and runs for cover behind one of the LW band insignias. This was live television so the laughter, embarrassment and hysteria are all real, all hilarious. It's one of the funniest memories I have of seeing both of my parents laugh with such abandonment that I'm surprised their dentures didn't fall out.
