My boyfriend tried to donate blood...
« on: September 20, 2013, 06:29:43 PM »
So we are a serodiscordant couple, it's been almost 7 months since i tested positive. My bf's told me  that he was going to donate blood, i didnt say much, maybe he wanted some screening, free testing, i don't know. I knew they'd reject him just for being gay (I live in Mexico), that's the law, i thought.

I've been on medication since the last 4 months and my VL is UD (btw)

Anyway he told me that he could not donate, i told him that i knew he couldnt because he was gay. he said that actually the law changed last year so it is allowed to, but he was not allowed because his couple is hiv+, which i think it's ok with me, the thing i didnt like was that the nurse told him "I hope you never get hiv" after he told her about me. Maybe she was just trying to be nice, but now that i'm well informed about how to protect him and us i think that message puts extra stress on him about contracting hiv...

what do you think?
they made me do it

Brace yourself then. There is a lot of misinformation and ignorance concerning HIV out there. It will not be the last snide comment you will hear..unfortunately it comes with the territory.
You simply cannot let that kind of stuff bother you. The best defense against that is information. If both you and your partner are armed with good up to date information about HIV, then instead of letting a comment like that upset you use it to educate those who do not know...turn it into a positive..

Good Luck

I don't see anything particularly wrong with what she said.  I mean, I hope no one else gets HIV.
