An intricate tale of 'medicine, monopoly and malice', FIRE IN THE BLOOD tells the story of how Western pharmaceutical companies and governments aggressively blocked access to low-cost AIDS drugs for the countries of Africa and the global south in the years after 1996 - causing ten million or more unnecessary deaths -  and the improbable group of people who decided to fight back

When some post conspiracy theories that drug companies are hiding a cure or would hide a cure, it is easy to see how some would think that.  Not starting a debate about all that, rather just saying it is understandable how some would be suspicious.

Thanks for sharing that Ray. I'm doing a talk to 18 year old college kids next week, they are doing assignments on HIV in Africa and why they think so many are still dying, although that's not part of my talk this time round.

Not sure if they know about "Fire in the Blood" but I will certainly give them the link to it.

Thanks for sharing

What is amazing is that people who are working on hte history of the virus are about certain to pin-point to one 'isolate' primary infected person. Even if this is incorrect, at the begining the 'signal' what so much in the statistical noise that CDC at an early warning about a suspected strange disease (affecting Gay men in SF (or was that LA) that was back in '84 if I am correct) , such a tiny signal that 2 weeks later they published a paper to call back the warning saying there was not enough statistical evidence

In other words it started with 1 (or a small number) of 'early birds' and the current toll is about 40 millions death (that is more than twice WW2!) (or about)

It is an amazing succes story (seen from the virus point of view...)

and a sad succession of poor public health policies, etc

This is why we have to keep asking for more universal health coverage

Reading through this forum, where quite many members live in the US, it is frustating to see that, in the RICHEST country (by far! ) , just being sure to get your meds (and hence stop spreading the bug) seems to be a tough challenge for many US Hivers

If the Senate would publish 'amateur videos collected by CIA' on what happens to people when we do not (cannot) provide universal care, I think there would be an outrage in the US. and the problem is not in a remote, empoverished country.

This WW3 war (on a tiny virus) kills more people /day than conflicts reported over and over again on TV

It is just outrageaous

Eric
