OB appointment this week and worried about infection
« on: October 22, 2006, 02:42:49 PM »
I am a married mother of 2. Four years ago I was molested by a friend and her spouse. I reported the incident, and told my husband, but I didn't share all of the details. I really just wanted it to go away. I have seen a conselor about this and that has helped, but I am ashamed to say I never could bring myself to get tested for all STDs. I did have a few things tested along with my pap-smear, but they did not include HIV. I recently learned that I am pregnant. I have my first OB appointment this week and am really worried that I might test +. I do intend to tell my OB about what happened, but my husband is in Iraq and if I test + I can't imagine telling him. I am really very stressed about it right now. I am also mad at myself for being so irresponsible! The stress plus the pregnancy is making me very tired and sick. It is really hard because I don't feel comfortable telling anyone why I am so stressed out. I guess that is why I wated to post here. I have an appointment on Friday. I assume I will be tested then but I have no idea how long the results will take. Either way I need to know because the not knowing is killing me now.

Hi Marie,

Well you certainly have a lot going on and you don't need to be burdened additionally by this concern about HIV.

I'm not sure what you mean about having been molested. The only cause for concern about HIV would be if  you had unprotected intercourse. If that didn't happen then HIV is not an issue for you. If there was unprotected intercourse then you should get tested and you can get a reliable answer now about that.

If there was intercourse then it was a single incident. That means the odds would be in your favor that transmission would not have occured. But only an HIV test can tell you for sure. In talking with your doctor you should also mention about other STDs and perhaps a full panel of tests done so any lingering doubts will be removed from your mind.

I think your chances of coming out of this ok are very good. Good luck with your tests and keep us posted.

I'm glad you found your way here. This is awful stuff to struggle with alone for anyone and especially with your husband in Iraq and two young children to keep up with.

Cheers,
Andy Velez
