Quality Of Life In Finland
« on: July 24, 2013, 02:34:16 AM »
I've lived in the US my entire life, and I may be moving to Finland.

I question the quality of life I'd have there, being HIV positive.

From what I've read up on it's not a problem there... far from it.

A microscopic portion of the population have it, or know anyone else who does.

I worry of the high levels of stigma, hostility, and discrimination of which I'd potentially face there, in reference to medical care, and disclosing my status.

Also, I fear having very limited resources in finding other HIV positive individuals for friendship, support, and intimate relationships.

My sanity could be at stake, living there.

The possibilities of my status preventing me from living a fulfilled life, in the sense that I couldn't enjoy new life experiences, such as moving abroad, without the discourse of consequences from having HIV, are gut-wrenching.

Are these fears reasonable?

Does anyone here have personal experience or links to information available related to this concern?

It'd be nice to be proved wrong.

My only question is "how does one get such an amazing opportunity?" Travelling again was already low on my possibility list, and I'm pretty sure HIV has quarantined me stateside for life.

What I'm saying is: take a sun lamp. You'll be fine. This sounds like quite an opportunity unless I'm missing something.

Sure it's a small number of people, but all of them live in a small overall area, I'm sure. It's a big country, but I doubt there's much HIV among the Saami... The prevalence is as high as Germany's and only half that of the UK's. So.

Hi Shadow.

Check out the e-atlas at aidsmap - http://www.aidsmap.com/e-atlas

A search for services in Finland (leaving the top two boxes in the default All setting, the third box blank and putting Finland in the last box) gives you ten results.

You can then go to each individual organisation's website to see what they offer, and/or send an email to the contact listed to ask questions.

I hope that helps.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

My mother inherited an estate (she's Finnish), and wants me to relocate there with her.

How nice! I hope you and your mum are very happy there. And don't forget - you always have us.
