Someone showed me this post from a porn actor who's advocating for safe sex.
I think it's great a guy like him is taking a stand for safe sex, but doubtful about his take on HIV meds etc..

Thoughts?

" The most serious of them all: HIV, the virus that eventually becomes Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome is still lethal today. If you contract HIV, you will most likely die from an AIDS related sickness.

I’m not going to tell you becoming HIV positive is no longer the death sentence it once was because that is not true. The drug therapy required today can be lethal on it’s own. They obliterate your internal organs, kidneys and liver. They only slow the onslaught of the inevitable. People living with HIV today need to live clean, sober and sexually sterile lives if they expect to experience the glorious lifespan the drug companies claim possible. A little known fact about HIV: once you have it, you have it and that’s the end of it. Not true. There’s such a thing as co-infection and super infection. This virus has mutated and shifted right in front of our very eyes over the past 30 years. There are whole mutated HIV strains that do not respond to drug therapy. You can’t run around having random, unprotected sex with anyone and everyone and not expect to pay for it in some way.

I know this is graphic, and I know it’s a fat ass pill to swallow. But no one is doing you any favors not being straight with you."

I would charitably say two things:

1) Your source's information is twenty years out of date.

2) If you are taking your medical advice from a sex-star, you certainly deserve a receipt.

None of that this sad, sad man's statements hold true.

"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."

I'm not taking my medical advice from a porn star, nor is he my source for medical info :)

Just thought it was interesting that people who should be in the know still think this way.

I think it's great he does PSA's but, yah, I wish people would get the info right.

Posted to create some discussion however.

exactly! Instead of a PSA, this idiot is doing the opposite and actually spreading misinformation :o

which of course does nothing but make our poor moderators have to work harder over in AII? ;)

He's a twink that was born in Idaho. Nuf said. He was also tangentially involved in the brutal death of gay porn director Bryan Kocis in 2007. Messy story -- read about it on his wikipedia entry. Oh right, and he's also made bareback porn so I guess the next step is to retire from porn and find Jesus. Happens all the time.

ps: not all porn stars are morons. I went on a date with a well known one circa 1998 and he was of above average intelligence. He now produces bareback productions.

What do I think?  I think porn stars should stick to making porn and leave comments on HIV to people who actually know what they're talking about.

I am not against porn actors talking about sex, sexual health etc. But this particular actor says garbage on the subject.

Why is anyone surprised that a guy, who's only claim to fame is shagging in front of a camera, is rather clueless about HIV.  It's not like he's actually educated about much of anything, so why should HIV be any different?  If I needed information on HIV, a porn star is one of the last places that I would look.  Your time would be better spent, refuting the mis-information that surrounds you, than worrying about what a porn star has to say.

His claim to fame is that he started porn when he was under 18 and all those movies were removed from circulation.  I think he started at 16 and yes, even after 18 he was barebacking on film.

I was amazed that out of 83 comments on the blog, only ONE refuted his ill-informed, skewed view of being poz. ONE. But then again, maybe there's some truth to this comment:

I wouldn’t be surprised if you didn’t post mu [sic] comment…and wouldn’t be surprised if you do the majority of the post above were filtered in your favor..kudos..LoL

It really does look like he filtered out posts that told the truth about hiv in the 21st century, only letting one slip by - probably on purpose (it was after the comment above) - so people would think the above comment was wrong.

What do I personally think about his message? Young, dumb and full of cum sums it up nicely. It's just (more than) a shame that he's furthering the stigma and discrimination we live with.

If anything regarding hiv should be criminalised, it's attitudes like his and his wilful dissemination of untruths that should get people (like him) locked up. Or at least gagged and outed as a ignorant liar. >:(

I received my diagnose 3 month ago. I've read a lot of articles and forums about living with HIV.
From things I've read I can't disagree with any statement in the quotation.
Corrigan's statements contradict with modern attitude to HIV infection.
But they don't contradict with reality.
Articles tell about almost normal life span and quality.
But they don't tell about problems which people living with HIV face with.
It is like to say the glass is half empty or the glass is half full.
Both sentences are true.

Sorry for my pessimism, I guess people come here for the inspiration. If I broke unwritten tradition of this forum just give me a hint.

Hi ohno and welcome to the forums . There isn't much of anything that Corrigan said that is true , its the musings of someone that clearly doesn't understand the history of the epidemic or what successful treatments with ARV's mean . Its a case of someone who I talking about something he doesn't understand .

Which of his points are wrong?

I've quoted and numbered the incorrect points:

1. The most serious of them all: HIV, the virus that eventually becomes Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome is still lethal today. If you contract HIV, you will most likely die from an AIDS related sickness.

1. The only people today who are dying from opportunistic infections associated with hiv/aids are those people who are diagnosed too late, or those who for whatever reason, cannot or will not access meds.

2. I’m not going to tell you becoming HIV positive is no longer the death sentence it once was because that is not true.

2. See #1.

3. The drug therapy required today can be lethal on it’s own. They obliterate your internal organs, kidneys and liver.

3. Not true. Meds today are effective and relatively side-effect free. This Brent guy knows nothing about current hiv treatments. In fact, it sounds like he's gotten a lot of his ideas from aids denialists.

(If you want to know more about aids denialists, see the http://www.aidstruth.org/ . Please be aware that posting denialist propaganda on these forums is strictly prohibited and doing so may result in a permanent ban.)

4. They only slow the onslaught of the inevitable.

4. Only true in the sense that we're all going to die one day. Today's hiv meds have brought many people back from the brink of death thus enabling them to live full and happy lives.

5.People living with HIV today need to live clean, sober and sexually sterile lives if they expect to experience the glorious lifespan the drug companies claim possible.

5. Bullshit. Sexually sterile lives? For most people living with hiv, the only thing that stops them having sex is their own attitude towards sex and their infection. Prevention measures such as using condoms and having an undetectable viral load work. In fact, hiv positive couples are having hiv negative children the "old fashioned" way, providing the positive partner is on meds with an undetectable viral load.

edited to add... It's not only hiv positive couples who are having hiv negative children. Serodiscordant couples (where one is poz, one neg) are also having hiv negative children the "old fashioned" way, with the negative partner remaining negative, provided the poz partner has been undetectable for at least six months, with no additional, active STIs present.

Thank you to the person who pointed out my omission via PM. :)

Regarding having to live a "clean and sober" life, a healthy life-style will lead to increased longevity regardless of a person's hiv status. I know plenty of people who smoke, and/or drink, and/or use recreational drugs and it has no impact on their health, outside any concerns that would be the same regardless of hiv status.

6. He's mixing up two separate issues - coinfection and superinfection. Coinfection means being infected with something else (hep B and/or C for example) and those are infections anyone should worry about, not just hiv positive people.

Superinfection is not super as in super-strength, it's super as in superimposed; one type of hiv virus on top of the other. This isn't the concern that many health care professionals would have people believe - for one thing, it's exceedingly rare. It's often used as a scare technique by prejudiced health care professionals who don't like to think hiv positive people are entitled to a sex life.

The handful of documented cases of superinfection have occurred in people who were newly infected in the first place. A person who is on hiv meds is not going to end up with a drug resistant strain just because they've had unprotected intercourse with someone who has a drug resistant strain. It just doesn't happen. It doesn't happen in an established, but untreated infection either.

7. You can’t run around having random, unprotected sex with anyone and everyone and not expect to pay for it in some way.

7. True for anyone.

Brent doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to hiv - and the scary thing is, is that people who are uneducated about the realities of hiv in the 21st century (like you oh-no) take his word as gospel. He's spreading misinformation and I wish he'd stop and concentrate on ... well, anything other than something he knows nothing about.

Great summary Ann.

Thank you. :)

Newt offered to do the same but with references - I was lazy and didn't include any. I have an excuse though - it was Tynwald Day (Manx national holiday) when I wrote it, so I was in holiday mode. ;)

I tell ya, that "sexually sterile" comment of Brent's was really offensive and made me very angry. I nearly wrote something specifically about it when you first posted this thread, but I would have had to give myself a time out if I'd written it then. That kind of attitude gets us nowhere in the greater scheme of sex education. >:(

His ideas about hiv still being a death sentence and the meds being lethal are also maddening - it's rhetoric like that which keeps a lot of people from testing. Misinformation like that scares the shit out of people. It's bad enough that stigma keeps many from testing, but to publish stuff on the internet that makes it sound like there's no hope just makes it worse.

I've got a ball-gag in a leather harness with Brent's name on it. Let me at him!

PS - I made a slight edit to my original dissection of Brent's ideas about hiv. Just so's ya knows.

Even this is untrue in terms of HIV:

1) if the prevalence in your sexual network is super low (as educators are not fond of saying) then you prob won't get HIV (other diseases are available).

2) luck plays a part, as do marginal routes of transmission. You can get HIV from one sexual encounter (as educators are fond of saying), possibly even "low risk," but then again you can put your arse round the country of your choice and just get friction burns on your knees. Luck, marginal routes of transmission....
