Condom Break - A little worried
« on: May 18, 2013, 10:02:35 AM »
Hello everyone! Hope you are doing well.

I'm currently working in West Africa and about two months ago, I had vaginal intercourse with a friend.  During intercourse, the condom did break, I felt it break, and I immediately pulled out (couldn't have been more than 3-5 seconds).  I then proceeded to put on another condom and continue until completion where nothing else went astray.  I did finger her but I have also read that there is really no risk through fingering.  The hypochondriac bug hit me hard a few weeks back and I went in to get a full STD/STI screening 37 days (about 5 weeks) after the incident with my physician in country.  After reading through the posts on this website I missed by one week although it is mentioned that the time to seroconversion is on average 22 days.  Everything came back negative.  I realize that I need to double check the results of the 5-week test at the 3-month mark but I would appreciate another opinion to ease my mind (hypochondriac mind) a little!

Thank you very much for your time!

All the best.

Hi Doodle . You seem pretty well informed about the low risk you had , thanks for that LOL  . It would be rare for your test results to change when you go for the 3 month conclusive test , I would fully expect a negative result .

We cant give odds or percentages but I can say the chances of testing positive from a condom break and the brief time it occurred is extremely slim . The risk for the insertive partner is significantly lower than it is for the receptive partner. And we are talking about a single incident of relatively short duration. All of those are factors which make for relatively low risk for you.

You are also correct , fingering is not a risk . If you aren't already having regular, routine checkups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine HIV tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than HIV. Some of the other STIs can be present with no obvious symptoms, so the only way to know for sure is to test.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid HIV infection. It really is that simple!

Hey Jeff,

Thanks for the quick response and you're welcome for the LOL!  Glad you could enjoy the hypochondriac within me haha.  I appreciate your opinion on my situation - it has definitely alleviated a lot of the stress accompanying the imminent 3-month screening.  It helps to hear someone say "I would fully expect a negative result" although I do take into consideration that low risk does not mean no risk.  It would be rather unfortunate to contract something after trying hard to practice safe sex.  I do try to undergo a screening every 6 months or so.

I'll use my last post (I believe I have 3), to update the forum on the results of the screening.  Thank you for helping me and I'm sure many others on this wonderful forum.

All the best.
