Possible exposure, am I at risk?
« on: February 03, 2015, 10:31:58 AM »
Hello all, thanks for taking the time to read my forum.

3 days ago I was intimate with a guy that I had been seeing off and on for a couple of months. This was the first time that he and I did anything besides kissing. We were fooling around for about a 45 minutes before I asked him about his status. It was at this point that he disclosed his HIV positive status. Although I appreciated his honesty, I was frustrated and upset that he did not tell me sooner or that I even had to ask..

Anyway, before the disclosure, I performed oral sex on him for about 10 seconds before he moved my head. I'm pretty sure that there may have been pre cum involved in this. In addition to this, we both exchanged anal oral. Also, we fingered each other (at one point there may have been tearing on his end as I used a few fingers). That is the scope of our interaction. There was a good bit of kissing involved as well but I already understand that kissing basically does not carry a risk.

Should I be concerned? He is on medication and consulted his personal doctor after the fact on my behalf. She expressed that I should not be too concerned and that in addition to low risk interaction, he is not as likely to transmit due to his health level (which is very up to speed on) and medication. Just wanted to seek a second opinion from you all. Thanks in advance!

Carlos

Nothing you mention is a risk for HIV infection.  Oral sex is not a risk, as HIV is a very fragile virus that becomes damaged immediately, when outside the host, where changes in temperature and pH, alter HIV, rendering it unable to infect.  The mouth is another barrier in that it contains various proteins and enzymes that alter HIV, leaving it unable to infect.  Rimming (oral anal) is not a risk for infection.

The risk factors for HIV are ...

Sharing IV drug needles immediately after use.
Unprotected anal and vaginal sex.
Mother to child during or shortly after birth.
Very specific health care situations.

Use condoms for vaginal and anal sex consistently and correctly and you will avoid HIV infection, it is that simple.

Joe, thanks for your response. I know that its low risk, but seeing as how this was my first sexual encounter with someone absolutely sure about their positive status, I grew concerned for my own status. At any rate, I appreciate your help!

Thanks again for the help yesterday. Just one more quick question: Does length of time affect any likelihood? The reason I ask is because a few of my fingers (lubed) were penetrating him for quite a while. I would say for about 15-20 minutes.. Just a point I failed to mention yesterday. Thanks!

The time your fingers were penetrating him changes nothing, as it was never a risk.

Hi

As Joe said nothing you mentioned is a risk for HIV, so you can stop worrying.

Please remember if you continue to be sexually active please get regular tests and keep yourself safe.
