Where are all the gay people in a galaxy far, far away
« on: January 15, 2013, 08:38:46 AM »
As an avid gaymer and someone that knows a thing or two about gameplay, I have always gravitated to the gay storylines and always play as a gay character. I love marrying a dude and enjoy it immensely.

A lot of games do this well. i.e. Skyrim, Fable, Dragon Age, Mass Effect.

Bioware finally listened to what some folks were asking for and said they were going to implement gay relationships in the MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic.  I was pretty excited.  I could finally play with my light sabre with my husband.

Then we find out that Bioware plans on creating a new planet just to be gay and it will cost money.  Pay to Gay anyone?

"What!?!", I thought.

Gaming has for the most part been a straight white boy's club and fairly recently publishers, studios and developers have finally started to recognize their LGBT gamers.

I could do a whole article about gender identity in gaming.

When this whole story about the gay planet (I guess they stick all the gay people there) surfaced it had me pretty torn.  I understand how important it is for games to develop new content where new feature's (being gay a feature, HA!) costs are off set.  I just don't understand why they can't just create gay characters and sprinkle them on all the worlds or more importantly why it wasn't included when it was being developed.

Anyone else torn?

For now, I think I am going to stick to Skyrim.

Discrimination on a Galaxy Far Far Away. How typical.  I play Sims which don't have a problem with married gay couples yet at times it seems easier for married straight couples for if I create a married gay couple they are the only gay couples in the game.  Wait there was a gay couple but they weren't married.  And in the game itself, if my married gay couple make out in public, there was a chance of booing from near by Sims characters.  This never happened with the making out of straight couples.

The games were build to influence the minds of young gamers growing up by staying more toward straight then gay sociability.  I guess the makers do not want to be blame for making people gay.

As for your problem you should alert the producers of that game that they are being highly bias and they should just allow gay and gay couples in the regular game.  To just make a gay planet sounds kind of good because you can be with like minded characters without harassment, a.k.a. a ghetto, but in another sense, it like saying do what you want out of our sight and we will put up guard dogs to keep you separated from the rest of us.
