Traveling to the U.S.A with HIV medication
« on: January 06, 2013, 02:12:21 PM »
Hello everyone.

This is Dave from Argentina. I will be travelling to the USA next February 2013 and I have a couple of questions regarding being HIV positive and travelling to the USA .

I got my visa approved for ten years back in June 2012. By then , the ban for HIV positive people was already lifted . The following question is made on the application form :

"Have you ever been afflicted with a communicable disease of public health significance or a dangerous physical or mental disorder, or ever been a drug user or addict?"

Which I replied "NO" since I understood that effective January 4, 2010, HIV- positive visa applicants will no longer have to answer "Yes" to this question based solely on their HIV status and we were allowed to answer "No".

My fear is related to taking HIV medication to the US and get searched by Customs. If they see my HIV medication and then -somehow- know that I answered "NO" on that visa form, will I be in trouble? Will they cancel my visa just because I answered NO to that question on the form but then they figured out that I was HIV positive because of my meds or this ban lift is fully implemented so that they wont give me any trouble?

I read a lot of people saying that they take their HIV medication in their hand luggage and had no problems with that. How safe is that? Last time I ve been abroad I went to Colombia and packed up my medication in  the checked luggage since i was terrified that they see my HIV medication and refuse me the entry - According to hivtravel.com that country has some restrictions- .

I hope someone can help me out here since I am paranoid to be deported or something like that just because I am HIV positive :(

Hi Dave ... your not going to get deported , I would just carry my meds in the bottle they were prescribed in as a precaution . Its a good idea to carry your meds as carry on in case your luggage is lost but other than this just relax and enjoy the trip .

HIV is not a "communicable disease of public health significance". You will have no problems. As already suggested I would carry meds in my carry on..

Hi Dave

I have been travelling to the States every year for the past seven years, and have never had any trouble with my meds.

As the others have told you it's best to carry them in your carry on in their originals bottles.

Enjoy yor stay in the States.

You might want to brush up on disclosure laws for the states you'll be visiting.
