Am I on the right track?
« on: September 26, 2012, 08:00:44 PM »
Hi everyone.

Well, I was stunned when I got the news. And to be honest, I'm not sure how I got HIV.

Well I know how I got it technically, but I'm not sure when I got it, or rather, who gave it to me. You see, I don't fool around much, and in fact, I haven't had unprotected sex in about 20 years. So, I'm confounded.

Fortunately, or not, I'm older. 48 this year. I lived through the early days of the AIDS epidemic. And I thought I had made it through, unscathed. Considering, those days, I rarely used protection. I was damn lucky.

I tested negative all along, even at my last physical in 2008/9, but when I had my bloodwork drawn April (2012) the results came back positive. I couldn't believe it.

The week I received the results, I broke out in shingles (!) That was a horrid experience, and terribly frightening. OMFG!

Anyway, I got through that. But my doctors were recommending I start antiviral meds right away. I started Atripla May 22. That was scary too, I was frighted by the possible side effects. Besides a few weird dreams and some dizziness, I haven't had any side effects.

Anyway, here are my numbers:
27 April: CD4=258, CD4%=20, Viral Load=638,559 (!)
22 May: Started Atripla
29 June: CD4=311, CD4%=18, Viral Load=1583
30 July: CD4=512, CD4%=24.4, Viral Load=550
17 Sept: CD4=498, CD4%=20, Viral Load=247

My viral load has dropped dramatically and steadily. My CD4 count has doubled. But what about my CD4%? It jumped up and then back down again. From what I read, 20% is not so great. But my doctors tell me that my numbers are good and not to worry. Ha! Easy for them to say.

So I'm wondering and worrying, am I on the right track? Shouldn't my CD4% be rising? I generally try to eat right and exercise. I don't smoke and rarely drink. What else should I be doing?

Any thoughts, please?

        Hi  MightyThor ,
I'm pretty much in the same boat .

When I turned 50    eight year ago , I got AIDS for my birthday  :o

How the hell I got there ?  I will never really know .

8 years later things are OK , I try not to think too much about how, why and when .

I was in total shock and went into a deep depression , Thank GOD that has gone for the most part .

My Husband of 32 years does not have HIV .  I had not played around in over 18 years , at the time of AIDS diagnoses ?

I started MEDS  a week later and have been doing well for the most part .

    Wishing you well .

MightyThor , Oh my T-cells are slowly raising up again .

They had risen quite nicely but dropped ?

I have been undetectable  three months after starting MEDS  :)
