Gary Johnson is former Governor of New Mexico (he was a Republican governor) and left office after term limits (8 years) - He left NM w/ a balanced budget. I read over his position on various issues and I actually support most of his stances on them.

I tend to be a moderate --- must be the Libra in me --- I lean toward Libertarian/Constitutionalist....even though I am a registered Democrat.

I am more for a flat tax, less government interference, reform of Social Security to ensure solvency for the long-term, end of "the war on drugs," --- a full analysis of what the federal government should really be providing and what should be left up to states, local government, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, etc. to provide....

The federal government has really overstepped its role in many areas and has crossed the line more than once in regards to separation of church/state, over-regulation, etc.

What worked 200 years ago, 100 years ago, or 50 years ago - can't possibly be expected to work today... the system as a whole needs to be analyzed and reformed - particularly with the "graying of America."  There is no way the current model can be sustained - it is impossible.......  You can't give out more than you are able to take in and think that is going to be sustainable over the long-term.

Well, I recently got stopped by the TSA.... (See other thread)   ;D

If I ever did run for political office, I would reveal all of my skeletons, so the press and my opponents wouldn't have a leg to stand on...take the air right out of their sails.

And you would probably get elected by a landslide of the popular vote......just sayin  ;D hey didn't Anthony Weinner  get voted out just for showing his junk
on the interwebs  and a smartphone  ;D

when I did this test days ago on FB I scored 86% with Jill Stein and 82% with Obama. After looking up who-the-hell-is-Jill-Stein, I realized that voting Green would be like the year I threw my vote away on Perot. :o and heaven knows I don't want to accidentally split a vote and let any Republicans homophobes win.

I wonder what made me score so high? Do I love illegal immigrants too much? Or is it the unabashed adoration of killing babies? I'm tempted to take the test a second time.

lol yeah, I had to take a second look at my results and see wich ones I agreed with him....From the list, I disagree on everything except foreign policy (the afghanistan and messing with other countries affairs), domestic policy (about internet laws and patriotic act) and two economic ones (about debt ceiling and bailing major banks).

And the rest are major disagreements.

At this rate....who the hell is Virgil Goode? this one is harder to know than jill stein  ;D. I know, I know..I'll google it later  :P

Of course, it goes without saying, if I were american, my vote would go to obama.

They always raise the debt ceiling eventually for good reason . I think the law stating that it has to be brought up for a vote should be struck down and more empathises should be put on balancing the budget so that the issue would be mute . Its a political tool for talking points used by both party's so they can avoid tackling other issues and score points with the base .

How convenient it would be if I could refuse to raise the dept ceiling on my credit cards to avoid paying what I owe .

Or maybe the government could actually learn to live with very limited debt.... the way most individuals have to do.....

I don't have access to an endless supply of money - and, to be frank, our government shouldn't operate like they do..... I mean really, this is becoming a real "bone of contention" with me...... As someone who pays over $12,000 in federal taxes alone, it really pisses me off that there is no concern at all (not only by our government - but even by many individuals) about the lackadaisical and what I really think is bordering on criminal spending of our government.

All sarcasm, jokes, etc. aside - it is unacceptable....and I am finding that I have less and less time and tolerance in my life for those who seem to think that the government has bottomless pockets..... without proposing any solutions to the crisis.

So, long story short - if I had any real choice in the matter - I would withhold payment to the government..... It would be perfectly acceptable to do this if I was investing in a private company. I'm not going to be expected to keep throwing good money after bad - and so it should be allowed with the federal government - I shouldn't have to throw good money after bad investments/expenditures.

Through my personal experiences, I have actually learned the value of a dollar - it's about time that our government do the same - regardless of who is President or in the House of Representatives.

Yes - this is a real sore spot for me.... and there needs to be some accountability from our "elected" officials.

so you think the federal government should default on the debt -- are you aware what would happen after that?

So, the solution is just to keep spending and keep incurring debt?

I say, default on the fucker - let people of all incomes, races, political parties, etc. feel the consequences....Including me.

Some of the greatest lessons I have learned in life have come from experiencing consequences..... and some of those consequences weren't even the result of something that I had personally done.

Shit..... what a wonder way to view life.... just do what ever the fuck you want and never experience consequences....    that appears to be the way the government is operating....

Default - then maybe people will actually wake the hell up and quit living in some type of fantasy world where they think that everything and anything should be handled by Uncle Sam and that we can just keep accumulating debt...

In the end, just like the real estate boom, bubble, and bust.... whether we default or keep paying on the debt (approximately 50 cents of every dollar) and keep spending --- the outcome is going to be the same - and it is not going to be pretty.....    Much like HIV, it is completely preventable..... but, similar to HIV, it involves taking some type of action to activate that prevention mechanism.

83% Obama. 9% Mitty.
I have a better opinion of GW than Mitty.
YES, there should be gun control.
YES, I do NOT believe illegals are the villains of society.
YES, on global warming.
NO, on offshore drilling.
YES, on SS marriage (naturally).
(To mention a few)

I feel Im fairly well grounded.
I never buy Mitty's attempt to demonize people. Even Mormon's.
Im sure Mitty agrees with at least that one... I wonder why???? (the F-ing SOB)

So, the solution is just to keep spending and keep incurring debt?

I say, default on the fucker - let people of all incomes, races, political parties, etc. feel the consequences....Including me.

defaulting on credit cards and loans is one thing, but ...  I forgot my point, but I think the outcome would be horrible.

Default - then maybe people will actually wake the hell up and quit living in some type of fantasy world where they think that everything and anything should be handled by Uncle Sam and that we can just keep accumulating debt...

I was reading not too long ago about how my city has plans to spend millions of dollars to revitalize just one of our local community parks... there's nothing actually wrong with the park, and this is in addition to the 15 mile river walk project underway that will likely cost in excess of a billion once completed.

I'm just sitting there wondering how on earth they can justify frivilously spending this kind of money when our country is trillions of dollars in debt...?!

It's like you say, every state and city and community in the country turns to rich Uncle Sam when they need want money, but they don't seem to want to own up to the fact they helped to create this massive debt and have a responsibility to help pay it off.

Granted, there would need to be some guarantees that the federal government wouldn't just turn around and spend itself right back into massive debt, but if every community, city, and state would simply "Unite" to help pay off the national debt we wouldn't even be talking about raising the debt ceiling or defaulting.

You can't default. It doesn't work like that.

Note I'm not saying "shouldn't" or "mustn't" --

I'm saying "can't".

The US is a net exporter of debt. You've got nothing to sell other than debt.

And a goodly portion of that debt, well it's held by China.

At let's face it, those inscrutable motherfuckers are not gonna let y'all default.

It's alright for resource rich economies like Australia -- we still have stuff we can dig up and shove down the insatiable maw of the Chinese.

And if things drop off in the meantime, it's ok. Our debt is a tiny fraction of our GNP.

But you guys cannot default.

You can't cut spending either (well not without massive social repercussions), you can only raise taxes.

The interesting thing will be how Congress goes about that.

oh course, it's "frivolous spending" ::) when you totally forget about all those companies doing the work that will get income, and all those workers who'll earn wages, and all the purchases those companies and workers will make within your community allowing others to keep their service, sales, and food jobs, earning their own wages and spending in your community..... ::)

Creating temporary jobs... and temporary spending from those jobs just reinforces how frivolous this spending is...

Give a man a fish and he eats for a day - train a man to fish and he eats for life.

These funds would better be spent getting long-term, permanent jobs, paying down the debt (as mentioned previously), being able to stimulate the economy because of the debt reduction, attracting permanent and expanding businesses, helping people to be able to establish their own businesses -- all by using a combination of means that were discussed in the other thread ("So, you are running for President)...

9 out of 10 times - the money that funds these busy work jobs - such as re-doing a park that doesn't need redone - pad the pockets of the cronies of local politicians - and many times (if not the majority) the actual expenses (such as the equipment, materials, supplies) are purchased from outside the local area (many times from factories in other countries) padding the pockets of those who don't even live in the community and probably not even in the country... So, the 1% retains its strangle hold on the wealth..... while temporarily lowering unemployment until the job is completed --- then the unemployment goes right back up again....

And now we have a non-taxed piece of property where tons of money have been spent frivolously and further expenses of paying unemployment benefits and other benefits to workers who are no longer working (because these are temporary jobs)..... and basically any money these workers did spend while employed was money that came from the coffers of city/state/federal funds - which were borrowed and/or came at the expense of further inflating the deficit and putting us more in debt to other countries (such as China)..... so, who is the real property owner and who is the real beneficiary here in the "land of the free?"

Wait.... we can prevent this.... just find another unneeded project and put people to work...... borrow the money (from who? oh, the Chinese - they have big pockets)..... and start the cycle over again....

One interesting thing that I hope people will take note of when they go to DC is..... go to the Capital building - go to any of the cafeterias in the building (they have excellent food)... look around and see how many Chinese business men you see.... the lobbyists from China... etc....  It will really open your eyes to just how much influence and control over the US has been given to another country by our lack of spending control and disparities in income that have severely impacted our ability to have revenues even closely come to keeping up with expenses.

The Chinese can't be blamed for this.... I don't blame them..... they are only doing what any smart and fiscally responsible business person would do....

I blame our government - and many times some of the citizens - who don't take the time to learn about how economics works and instead buy into the simple solution of spending government money for "flash and dash" job creation on frivolous projects that aren't even coming close to addressing the real issue.

Fixing a hole that doesn't exist makes absolutely no sense - especially when there is a much more massive problem going on ---- its comparable to a doctor operating on the good arm - but leaving the rotting one with gangrene alone because the good arm is easier "to fix."

Ah yes, I did totally forget how well them trickle down economics work... ;)

Seriously, though... I say "frivilous" because these parks projects are essentially bridge-to-nowhere type projects. Some residents will use these recreational services but most will not, and at the end of the day, the only long term job creation will be a handful of semi-permanent "seasonal" janitorial/maintenance/utility type positions that only pay around $20,000 a year. If even that... according to the NC Division of Parks and the Raleigh P&R Department, unpaid volunteers are used extensively to help run and maintain our state and city parks.

Now I'm not saying that providing parks and other recreational and leisure opportunities to residents isn't worthwhile, but when the state and the country are facing massive debt and unemployment, these types of services should be considered extremely low priority and put on the back burner.

At least where I live, investment in public facilites (parks, transport, etc.) give a high return in attracting and maintaining businesses and residents. Our local economy has successfully transitioned from manufacturing to en emphasis on higher eduction, medical services and "creative class" high paying jobs, and people in those value a good living environment (parks, bike trails, waterfront and museums). And we've continued to do this, actually accelerated, during this long recession. Most of it is private/public partnerships.
