Thinking of taking a cruise for first time ever
« on: July 01, 2012, 01:39:16 AM »
A few people from work are wanting to go on a cruise next year and I have been invited. It sounds quite fun, but I do have a big problem with motion sickness and a slight fear of being out to sea. I've been told that you can hardly feel the boat move, but a part of me would just imagine the slightest motion and I'd be done for. I take the usual over the counter drugs when I fly but even they fail sometimes. Anyone here prone to sickness but still had a non-miserable time on a cruise before?

Hi

I've been on a couple of cruises. I don't suffer motion sickness, but always take dramamine or bonine along just in case. I think there's a patch that can be used near the ear which I saw many passengers wearing. I'll see if I can look it up.

Em

Just looked up a cruise thread about it and based on what I read posted by the various users I wouldn't take it --you could talk to a doctor and get an opinion as to whether there's something equally effective with fewer side effects than scopolamine.

How did you do once the cruise was over? I had a cousin go on a cruise once and she got her "sea legs" on the boat and was fine, but she actually became sick when the cruise was over. The phenomenon known as "stillness illness" when you are on land but still feel like you are on the boat..Affected her for a few days

Hi

I was amending the post while you posted.

I was fine afterward and on the trip stops, there was a little bit of getting used to walking but it wasn't bad at all.

Large cruise ships have "stabilzers" so that in up to light/moderately rough seas you most likely will not feel any motion sickness. However, I have been on a cruise where we encountered rough seas that lasted and entire 24 hours and even I got (slight) nausea from that and retired early.

So like em said taking dramamine with you on any cruise is prudent. Maybe if your anxiety levels will be elevated you should discuss a sedative with your doctor before going.

Of course, most cruises you will never even encounter rough seas so look at my post as only something exceptional.

I am prone to motion sickness - especially on the water and amusement park rides -
that said.... I have taken several cruises and have not had any problem.

On the first cruise, I took a dramamine when I first got on, but didn't need anything after that - I did it as a precaution.

You will have a great time. I love cruises - food, sights, casino, places to visit, activities, relaxation.... they are great.

Well, I was on a many cruise and one that lasted for just over a year.  I was a sailor for the U.S. Navy and I was on various Aircraft Carriers in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans.  The main problem I had with motion sickness was that I needed to wear glasses the whole time.  I am near sighted, astigmatic and dyslexics which somehow was the cause of the motion sickness at sea.  Most fellow sailors felt at the time that I was faking it.  However, when I wore my glasses for the astigmatism, the symptoms of feeling dizzy, sick in the stomach, slight headache went away amazingly fast.   Maybe an eye checkup, which makes sense since the eyes are a factor in motion detection, may help and wearing glasses or contacts will cure the sickness.

modified for I only put dyslexics when I meant astigmatic.

I've taken 16+ cruises and have never had any issues.  I always get seasick on smaller ferries that travel the open ocean, but have never had that issue on a large cruise ship.
Two key things -- take a dramamine (or whatever you are taking) just prior to getting on the ship.  You want the drug in your system before you sail.  Once you get seasick, those pills won't help.  If you DO get seasick, the doc on board can give you something (for a fee, of course).
#2 -- try and get a cabin mid-ship, which is the most stable area.  The stabilizers help minimize the side to side motion, but can't do anything for the up and down -- which is far worst in the front of the ship.
Most cruises can avoid any prolonged time in rough seas -- unless you are doing  an ocean crossing voyage.
Talk with your doctor about options -- I see lots of folks with the scopolamine patches.

That's a good point about mid-ship vs. front of ship. When we encountered rough seas (which, btw, had the force of a cat-1 hurricane) my parents were at the front of the ship and had a horrible night.

As far as being able to avoid rough seas because most are in open ocean, well... uh -- we were in the Baltic. Can't avoid anything  like that in an enclosed area.

Oh right, and this was on the first cruise I ever took :) but you're right that this won't happen to most people.

ps: should I dig up the nightmare story of my parent's ship hitting something going out of Galveston? IIRC it's a good one.

I have some friends who go on cruise often , my friend Micheal gets motion sickness very easy so he uses a prescription patch that goes behind the ear . I must warn you though that when you take it off you may have some problems with getting back to normal without the patch . Here is a link to check out . Micheal swears by this product but did get sick once after he took the patch off before all the medicine in it had worn off .

I've been doing a lot of reading on it..Ive heard that western caribbean cruises during the winter or spring months (outside of hurricane season) are the best for smoother seas, which is exactly what they are looking at..It really does look like fun and my motion sickness is usually all psychological anyway..If I put my mind at ease I'll be fine..Ive noticed that when I think about sickness and worry about it, that's when it happens

Get some Bonamine for motion sickness.  It didn't have any interactions my meds, but check with your pharmacist.  Though I've crossed the Atlantic a few times by ship and even the Bonamine couldn't help with the 30 foot waves we encountered once.

I find the best thing for our health is to do something normal... and maybe just maybe forget about all this shit for a while. Of course do not forget to take your meds.
