Why do I get sick all the time?
« on: May 12, 2012, 06:42:47 AM »
My numbers seem to be good, however for the past 2 years I have been getting sick more often and I would like to know why.

Every month I get something, last month I was admitted to hospital with pneumonia. For the 2nd time this year I have conjunctivitis, I had strep throat last year and either flu or cold at least once every 3 months!

Is this just a particular bad streak of luck or is this how my life will be from now on?

During the first 2-3 years of starting medications I was not getting as sick as now, even though my numbers were lower.

Hi Newbie,
Unfortunately i think its just bad luck.  My best friend, who is negative, is sick about every week with something.   He just goes thru spurts where he is sick all the time, then he gets back into swing of things.  He has a very stressful job with long, crazy hours and that seems to take a toll on him.

   Hi   Newbie ,

Are you around  sick people ?

I never , Well  very rare to ever get a cold or flu  .

When I get near  little kids that is when i tend to catch a cold .

This past winter I stayed away from  sick people , Even covered my face

in the store , When needed ...

My Bob gets colds often , always has .

I have been   HIV  for over  half my life now  , it does not cause colds .

Hope you feel better soon .

ALSO ,   I wash my hands 50 times a day  and never stick my hands on

face or in my eye !  , Hands belong away from your face unless you have

just scrubbed and are eating  chicken or corn  ;)

My number are nice !    But even when I was Full Blown AIDS I was never sick !

I have had a horrid pneumonia  event ,  That was several years ago ....

Keep hands clean and stay away from sick people , Hope you  get back

     to normal soon .

                                                          Carl  AKA  Weasel

My brother is neg and gets sick several times a year--colds and flus.  Nothing too serious, though.  Although, he swears we are exaggerating how often he gets sick.  He'll make fun of me for washing my hands so often and using hand sanitizer.  But, knock wood, I don't get sick very often.  Will have the occasional sore throat, but I actually think that is due to stress a lot of times.  I'm not a nut about hand washing.  Will wash or use sanitizer before eating with my fingers.

As already asked, are you around a lot of sick folk?

Hi,
No I am not around sick people at all.
I work in an office; mornings only. Which is a blessing because it enables me to go to work and soldier on even when I am sick, as I only work 5 hours.
But I can assure that almost every month I come down with something. This year in January I had the flu; that never really went away and in March turned into pneumonia. In April I got a really bad cold and now I have a nasty conjunctivitis.
It just never stops.

You do know this has nothing to do with your HIV status, right?

Hello Newbie,
Carl is correct about the hand washing / keeping your hands away from your face. I work in healthcare and I am often in contact with some very sick people. I practice universal BBP precautions (gloves, gown and face shield) and I still thoroughly wash my hands after every contact that I have.
My brother works in an office and is sick often because they spread germs around. Most of his coworkers have young children and they bring the germs and bugs to work with them.
The fact that you have conjunctivitis tells me that you have rubbed your eyes with your hands since this is how the infection is spread.
I hope that you get well soon and can discover why you are getting sick so often.
Peace,
Billy

Dear newbie76,

Looking at your byline, you started meds five years ago, so it is not the meds that is causing your health problems , neither are your numbers which are very good.

How about considering what you eat (healthly like fresh vegetables , fruits ,etc) or taking a vitamins complement. What about your mental health - like being at ease with HIV statues , etc. getting enough sleep, exercises ..........only you can check that and see if there are changes that can be done to improve your overall health .
Good luck.
