School shooting in Chardon, Ohio
« on: February 27, 2012, 10:43:42 AM »
There aren't too many details available yet, but apparently some kid(s) opened fire in a high school cafeteria around 7:30 this morning, injuring four.

It's always really sad and disheartening to hear of news like this.

I grew up not all that far from Chardon. It was always considered one of the more "posh" areas of NE Ohio. They're famous for maple syrup and most kids in NE Ohio have gone on a school field trip to see how they make it. At least they did when I was a kid in the 70s. I believe I also went there one time with my Girl Scout Troop.

Hmm... maybe all that sugar had something to do with it?

Anyway, you can read about Chardon here and you can read an initial report about the shooting here.

The only saving grace seems to be that nobody was killed. Even so, lets all keep the good folks of Chardon in our thoughts today. A bad situation, one that I hope has the best possible outcome for all concerned.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

They're now reporting five injured - four lads and a girl. And they seem to think it was only one shooter - initial reports speculated there were two.

I said in my first post that the area was considered "posh" (at least when I was a kid), but that's not quite right. It's not like there was a lot of wealth in the area, but it was pretty much middle class, ordinary, Norman Rockwellesque, semi-rural small town America. I have fond memories of Chardon - we visited there fairly often on weekend family drives, so I have more experience of the place than just school and Girl Scout field trips. Was a very nice picturesque area.

Yes we have witnessed too damned much of what happened in Ohio today.  Sorry it brought back memories of your childhood Ann in such a negative manner.  Take care.

This situation is so sad all around.

Condolences to the families.
