Fever 104°, avoiding A&E & delerium as a charm tactic UPDATE
« on: September 25, 2006, 08:51:10 AM »
...just where I had one last time I had shingles.  Temperature has been a steady 101° F/38° C for 3 days.  My leftside groin lymph node swelled up like a cocktail sausage then went down.  Kinda ache. Perspire (fever is not quite right) when I lie down but not when I sit up (weird).  My right & left foot's are tingling like last time I had shingles.  Plus I got a wicked cold sore last week, ain;t had one for years.  And I note, only get them when emotionally stressed.

So, plan A, is clinic tomorrow n see the duty doc.  I will get the nurse who does everything to bloods for viral load, & the full sexual health screen, plus hep C test.  Hope it's not the one who t-e-l-l-s you in very slow you are 5 words what she's doing & looking for.  Yes I will lie on my side n suffer the indignity of the duck-billed speculum.  And see the duty doc.  I hope it's the smart Iranian woman who knows what's what n does a nice line in empirical treatment just in case.  Last time it was the "The Office" doctor, who knows diddly squat.  Not only does he look like a 16 yr old trying to grow a full beard, he's clumsy.  Last time he insisted on doing the speculum thing himself (why? there are nurses) and effected  a rather hasty exit.  I had to point out, at the end of the consultation naturally, the big glob of KY on his hair.

Pre plan A is aspirin, honey & lemon, lysine n The Independent crossword, plus Radio 4, in my oh so romantic but not quite comfy half-decorated bedroom.  Bare plaster, dust on the floor, but the linen's clean n good.

Poem of the day is Sylvia Plath's Fever 103°

(Of course, it could be sommat else, being a good hypo I's made a list  :D)

Now playing: my fever, 101°

Okay so, last night was a proper, you have a water bed n it's leaking fever night, but my AM temp after 900mg aspirin (at 3.30am) was normal (did jack squit to the fever though between 3.30am and 7, I was like a beached Great White, my vest still isn't dry).

So got ready to set off for clinic.  The main reason to go to clinic was for a standard bloods and a sexual health screen etc + maybe see a doc.  But, sleep intervened & I didn't get there til 3.45pm, which is kinda late, esp. as the on-call doc knocks off at 1pm, and sexual health screens wrap up at 3pm (er news to me but...).

Indeed the first thing the the nurse said to me as I sat there sweating was "It's very late".

I gave 14 tubes  + two small bottles (like maybe glass of wine sized bottles) plus a smaller bottle (like vodka miniature) of blood + a urine sample + had my blood pressure, temperature, heatbeat looked at.  Blood  pressure normal 124/74. The 39.9° C temperature + 103 bpm heart rate kinda put things into some kind of serious tempo.  I was at this point delirious n sweating. An A&E referral form was made out, etc etc.

Delirum as charm: I swear from a frosty start the nurse would've married me at 5.15pm when I left for home.

The last working consultant was kind enough to see me, so spared A&E, and I had the most thorough physical exam of my life.  And an ECG (nice portable machine there). And went to main hosp, for an express chest x-ray, miracle quick at 30 mins round trip & results by telephone (all clear).

I have, according to the doc, a "very healthy-looking anus".

So he thinks, subject to labwork, this is a viral infection (er, flu), though rather concerned about my melting body temperature.  He gave me some strong non-steroidal AND steroidal anti-inflammatories, and a referral note should my temp not go down so I can persuade the local A&E to see me (cos in England it's hard if you can walk/are conscious these days). He said this is not HIV related.  He said at an outside, outside chance it may be atypical presentation of 2nd stage Treponema infection (that's syphilis to you people) but in 20 yrs being a doc he's only seen one case without a rash, n my skin's absolutely fine. The herpetic threats have gone away.  My joints don't ache anymore. I did look a sight on the commuter train with my hospital ID tag, n plasters on each inside elbow joint but by the time the train pulled into Brighton I was relatively cool n not sweating.

Flu then.

I now have a long list of things I deffo don't have, like TB...

I apologised for taking up their time.  Doc said not at all.  Continuous fever, it is right to see a doc.  He's gonna write to my primary care authority and tell them to give me a GP within walking distance. And send them a fat, fat bill. Hopefully that'll  kick their arse into gear & I'll get an offer of a GP closer than 8 miles away.

On the basis of my rather electric nerve reflexes he referred me to the rheumatologist (for the future I think).  Said something about maybe it's auto-immune related inflammation, esp. since my chest, nose etc is not producing any virus-infection style gunk.

No sexual health screen.  He thinks it unnecessary with all the bloods they've taken for everything going (phew! no duck-billed torture) plus he did an anal swab for HPV.

I love the NHS. I think I'll send a postcard to say thanks.

Thanks for all your good wishes.

- matt

Now playing: light trickle of sweat down my back, plus a plate of goodies from M&S Simply Food and a glass of down under Shiraz Cabernet.

Matt,

Jesus, talk about being checked over from asshole to elbow.....  I'm much relieved that the doc is convinced this isn't anything more serious in nature.

Please take care, and drink lots of fluids (and chicken noodle soup of course).

So it sounds like just a waiting game for your tcells to kick the vermins out.  Well I hope you feel better soon and nothing serious comes from the tests on the liters of blood you gave.

Which reminds me that it is time to get my flu shot, and that perhaps I should get it while I'm in the States.

anus, yes, without gloves I hasten to add, with a small pen torch n his fingers n then a swab thing, which I didn't notice. Indeed, there was not an orifice or opening unchecked (did you know you have a sphincter at the end of your urethra ;D)

anus, how often? My clinic nurse suggests a full sexual health screen for most people every time you get bloods done for CD4 etc, which is every 4 months, and this deffo involves getting yr arse looked at, plus a HPV smear every year unless there's reason to do it more often
