HIV does not hide in bone marrow cells
« on: February 13, 2012, 12:13:41 PM »
Ash, the android from the movie "Alien", admired the alien creature, describing it as "a perfect organism." I think he would admire hiv too, although it seems it's not as pefect an organism after all.

Very small study. Does this mean we pozzies could become bone marrow donors one day ?

I was thinking about the Sangamo zinc finger nuclease research (genetic modification of T-cells) and how hiv infection of the bone marrow cells could make it difficult, or - my worst fear - even impossible to achieve a functional cure for hiv. Bone marrow stem cells are the parent cells of the immune system; eg. macrophages and T-cells, and my thought was: what good does it do to modify a T-cell to resist hiv infection, if the cell "by birth" is already infected? But now it seems that hiv does not infect stem cells after all  :)
