My first Anniversary
« on: January 27, 2012, 02:23:08 PM »
Well it's Jan 28 here.

Thinking of this day last year brings on a range of strong emotions. Seems so far away and yet near. I feel I'm a different guy sometimes, at other times, the very same that was.

I've come a very long way this past year. So much has changed and yet so little.

Learnt so much about HIV and about myself. Made new friends. Some relationships redfined and other boundaries redrawn.

Life goes on.

Thanks forums friends.  :)

Wow, you've been around for almost a year?  Time does fly.

Congrats, not on celebrating a year with this lovely virus, but on the intelligent and level-headed approach that you have taken to living with HIV.

I'm with the Rev on this one.  I had no idea you were recently diagnoses, based on your posts.  You seem to be gaining a level of maturity that eludes many people.  You should be proud.

Congratulations on the first year anniversary.
If you think the first year went by fast, wait until the second anniversary.
The first year my mind stayed on the HIV but now at almost two years it is only a passing though and life is normal.
Here is hoping for normalcy in your life and health.

Hey Space, while it's a shame you had to end up here, I want to thank you for being here and often lending the voice of reason to discussions. You're wise beyond your years, both age-wise and anniversary-wise. Not to mention the fact that you can also be a wise-guy. ;)

You'll be amazed at how fast the time goes - I'll have my eleventh diagnosis day anniversary in February and my fifteenth seroconversion anniversary in May and it seems like only yesterday. Time flies when you're counting CD4s!

Space,

On this last point you are wrong about your contribution to the forums.  One of the things we stress is the way to live with HIV is to actually LIVE with HIV and all that entails and your example shows others that they can also adjust to living with HIV.  That's a powerful message to present, especially to the newly infected, when they can see that others have become poz, survived and even started to thrive.  There are also many people who read the forums, but never participate, so your example and message reach even further.

I remember the power of meeting another pozzie in 1985, when I tested poz.  The very fact that he existed was a great boost to my self esteem and thoughts of survival.  Just because we many not see the message, does not mean it is not there.  Sometimes our actions speak louder than any words could.

Mine is getting close too. But you know what, I won't wish you to have many more anniversaries. Maybe just a few. I hope you'll be able to say on another Jan 28th the following:

"It has been xx years since I was diagnosed with HIV. And xx years since I got rid of it".  ;)

I also remember meeting my first pozzie (face-to-face) after diagnosis. He had been poz for ten years and still wasn't on meds and was doing well, which was a great comfort to me as my doctor recommended that I didn't need to start and that had me worried.

I remember telling Steve a few years later how much our first meeting meant to me and how much it helped me come to terms with and accept my hiv - and he was astounded at how much he helped me. He had no idea how powerful it was for me. It's an afternoon I'll never forget. Steve will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you Steve!
