Have never been inside the Newseum and have always wanted to go.  Wonder if we will have a group wanting to visit there.

One Tampa reminded me that I would like to see the National Cathedral, even better take in one of their choral Evensongs. Looks like they are in the late afternoons...anyone wanna accompany me? Gary? Phil? Any other God fearing AMG'ers??

Heathens welcome also.

This heathen will go, the methodist part of me won't even care that I will be in a Cathedral. ;D

Also the  Holocaust Museum is good, although you can only take the tour at certain times, but you can make the time that day I think.

I've always wanted to witness a spontaneous combustion...so now I am interested.  Most people are afraid of being hit by lightening when they enter a church...come to think of it, I haven't seen that either!

There has been extensive repair work done on the National Cathedral since last year's earthquake so it will not be in its full glory.  Same is true of the Washington Monument which now may not reopen until 2013 or 2014.

Fear not though, there are more free things to see and do in Washington DC that can possibly accomplished in the time we will be there.

Eager to join you all next Saturday morning.  So wish I could come sooner.

Willy,
I am also bringing a bottle of Firefly Ice Tea Vodka, and maybe a bottle of cool whip vodka to.  Depending on traffic on 95 and the beltway Thursday night the chambord may be gone.

@Den  If you spontaneously combust I will gladly help resuscitate you ;D

Ballston Common I would not call "destination shopping" more a neighborhood place. If you want the best shopping on the East Coast outside of NYC then you should use a day and go to Tyson's Corner. Tyson's actually has not one, but two massive shopping malls located right next to each other.

Tyson's Corner Center: http://www.shoptysons.com/

Tyson's Galleria: http://www.tysonsgalleria.com/

However, you have to take both the subway and a bus/taxi to get there. It's about 8 miles from the hotel.

Keep in mind that there is also a Macy's department store in downtown DC, and if you insist on only using the subway to shop take the red line to the Friendship Heights station in Chevy Chase. There is both a Neiman Marcus and a Saks Fifth Avenue there.

There is also an upscale mall in Georgetown - just a few blocks away from the Foggy Bottom metro station.....

but if I can find a nice pair of boots, ( if they have my size most retailers don't  :o) I might buy them, and buy you lunch  ;)

Yeah, I know -- it's been there since I was a teen. At that time it was very cutting edge/very high end, but I looked at the store listing this morning and there's only four stores (I discounted the Dean & DeLuca because it's a food store and not even physically in the mall, it's next door). It's been having tenant issues for years. But if anyone does go there, make sure and find the old canal behind the building as it's got a great walkway/park type area that has also been in a fair amount of films.

Personally I find malls kind of tired. I haven't been in one since early 2005 :) There are better options just walking around on the street in Georgetown, or downtown DC. Still, if you like shopping malls there is no comparison to Tysons.

I lived for three years around the corner from Ballston Common.  It is a neighborhood type mall...not mega shopping, however there are a wide variety of restaurants.  It is on the Orange Line at Ballston...a few stops up from our place.  You most surely would NOT walk there.

I suspect you will find much more near where we are located though.

Once you master Metro (easily done) the whole city is at our feet.

You most surely would NOT walk there.

That is exactly what Curtis would do if he were joining us this year. In fact, he would probably walk from the hotel to the Mad Hatter. That's just the way he rolls/walks.
