Oh my god very risky please some insight.
« on: December 16, 2011, 03:16:37 PM »
Hi all, here is my terrifying exposure. I was receptive anal with a transexual prostitute. At one point this person thrust in and pulled out very quickly. I turned around and saw them changing the condom. Therefore, I think (am almost sure) it broke inside me. I estimate exposure time to be 1-2 seconds. I say I think it broke inside me because this person swears up and down it did not, however they acknowledge the condom did break. Last time I checked air does not just break a condom, therefore I am 99.9% sure it broke inside me. I am not sure if I had any tearing. It was painful, but I did not notice any blood. For arguments sake though, let's say I did have tearing. This was within 2 minutes of the act starting, and there was no ejaculation. This person is a well known escort here in Ontario, and advertizes their hiv tests are available to see for the last 5 years. I asked to see them but this person did not have them as they were touring out of their home city and they keep the tests there. They have stated over and over they are negative, and have taken there next hiv test this past week, which will be nearly 5 weeks post exposure. I am just wondering, am I doomed? I have been reading the internet nonstop and honestly it has me more freaked than I was before. I know this is the riskiest exposure out there, just wondering if anyone has any opinions on this. My anxiety has gotten so bad I have become very depressed, my ocd is back full force after beating it years ago, etc... . Any info. would be appreciated. Thank you so very much. Take care.

OK, you did have a risk, but from what you have described of the incident, it was a low level risk. It was a very brief event and it was only one time, apparently without ejaculation having taken place.

Someone else's test result is not important. It's YOUR test result that matters. And you can do an initial test at 6 weeks. If you test negative as I think will be likely, then it is most likely that you will continue to test negative at 3 months for a conclusive result.

Take the test in another week.Ultimately I expect you to come out of this ok.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks Andy much appreciated. I know I could be shooting myself in the foot here, but have you heard of many cases of such brief exposure without ejaculation leading to hiv? By the way, I took a 4 week rapid test and it was negative. Just wondering about why this person is saying it did not break when it most probably did break in me. I know you don't have any answer to that, but I just keep wondering. I will be testing next week for sure.

Hiagain Andy. Just wondering, is it a little reassuring they pulled out so quickly and that they outwardly advertize one can see their test results? Sorry for another post.

What the other person said/says is now totally irrelevant. You are anxiously searching for the reassurance that only an HIV negative test result can give you.

As I said previously, the odds are in your favor that you're going to come out of this ok. A negative at 4 weeks is a good sign. The average time to seroconversion is 22 days, so you've passed one hurdle. If you want to you can test at 6 weeks. A negative again at that point would be a strong indication that you are going to continue to test negative at 3 months since all but the smallest number of those who seroconvert will do so within 4-6 weeks after a risk.

Meantime you need to make a real effort to focus on other matters in your life. It will make the waiting time much easier than you may imagine is possible. Don't bother saying you're too worried to do that. That response will not fly here. Just do it.

Thanks for the response. I really am trying to just do things but it is so hard. I have a wife  and son, and all that runs through my head all day is the scenario of me getting hiv and having to tell them, ruining our lives together forever. It is not easy, as I am sure you have heard many times.I don't even know why I am writing now. I am just in such a state of fear and guilt (maybe?). I know you mentioned it is a bit of a low risk, but still a risk is a risk. I am really trying to function, but it is so hard, especially around the holidays, when you need to be so social. Anyway, I go for my 41 day test on Wednesday, as they are not open a t42 or 43 days. I do hope this is still considered a 42 day test. Just wondering, when you answer a question, do you answer it under the assumption that the other person is positive? Thanks so  very much.

Our evaluation of risk is always with the thought that the other person is HIV+.

The one day less will not make a difference in terms of the accuracy of your test result. If you test negative this time then the likelihood is that you are going to continue to test negative at 3 months.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Sorry to write again, but in your opinion judging off this incident, do you think I will be negative? I know you said you think I will be negative so I don't know why I am even asking. I am such a mess.

I know symptoms mean nothing but this has me freaked. At the 4 1/2 week mark I stared with a runny nose and sore and this lasted 4 days. Yesterday I started with another runny nose and sore throat, this is the 39 day mark. Could either of these be ARS? I am so worried.

Last time I checked air does not just break a condom,

Sherlock,

Air is actually one of the leading causes of condom breakage. And it fits with your description of what happened.

When an air bubble is left in the tip of the condom when it is put on, that trapped air can cause the tip of the condom to burst and it quite often happens when the person wearing the condom first tries to enter, particularly when they are entering a tight anus.

I fully expect you to continue to test negative over this very brief incident.

Hi Ann. Thank you so much for your reply. I did not know this. However as much as I wish to believe this it isn't fitting with my memory of the incident. The way I remember it is this person thrust into my anus then quickly pulled out after which I slowly began to move and turn around. I mean I suppose it is possible I am forgetting things. It would possibly explain why this person is so adamant the condom did not break inside me. I really would love to believe this possiblity. Have you ever heard of anyone possibly foregetting things during an incident? I go for my 41 day test today and I am sooooo worried. I thank you very much for your kind words.

If you test negative today then the likelihood is that you will continue to test negative at 3 months. And like Ann, I do expect a negative result today.

Good luck.

Today was a negative result. The social worker there said if I were going to test positive I most probably would have by now. I can only hope this is true. Should I test again at 8 weeks, or wait the remaining 6 weeks then test? It is just such a long wait. Thanks so much all the best. Halfway there. I just hope for the same result as today in 6 more weeks.

The only conclusive negative test is the one done 3 months post exposure.

Stop generating unnecesary drama. Get busy with other things in your life and do a final test at 3 months. I expect the result to be another negative.

I didn't mean to offend anyone. You mentioned to post my 6 week result and I did. I appologize if I have bothered anyone.

OK, good. Get on with your life until you re-test and collect another negative result.

Cheers.
