"I am sick of " Larry Kramerís words in 1983
« on: December 02, 2011, 11:43:30 AM »

This article was first published in the New York Native, Issue 59, March 14-27, 1983, the Larry Kramer scream heard around the world

Some statments of Mr. Larry Kramer
I am sick of our electing officials who in no way represent us.

I am sick of closeted gay doctors who wonít come out to help us fight to rectify any of what Iím writing about.

I am sick of gay men who wonít support gay charities

I am sick of ďmenĒ who say, ďWeíve got to keep quiet or they will do such and such.Ē

And I am very sick and saddened by every gay man who does not get behind this issue totally and with commitment Ė to fight for his life.

This is the most important essay on gay men and AIDS ever published in the twentieth century.  And, having been written in March 1983, it has proved to be so prophetic as to be terrifying in its accuracy.  Kramer proved himself here to be the Cassandra of the pandemic, and he has been ignored and vilified--to our regret and shame--as much as she was.    We have never learned how to respond to truth.

Alex, I've taken the decision to move this from the Activism forum into the Living forum, where more people will see it. The Activism forum is more for current hiv activist actions, rather than the history of hiv activism.

Thank goodness Mr Kramer kept on speaking out. We have much for which to thank him.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

thank you very much

I found this article very interesting. I believe that many there are fallen in a called state "tatus quo". many we are in a zone of comfort. if I participate in these forums it is because I hope to understand and to see where I can help. still itself in that search. also it is sad to see that the powerful country but of the world has a waiting list for medecines.
the words of Kramer are very effective.
Is there some present leader that looks like to him in something ?

No, Alex, sadly there is not.

There are two men today, however, who do somewhat, in various degrees, practice the kind of activism that Kramer was all about:  Michael Weinstein, president of AIDS Healthcare Foundation, and Charles King, president of Housing Works.
