I've been on Neurontin (Gabapentin) since 1999 for neuropathy in my legs/feet.  It's gotten worse in my left leg in the last year.  I also take 2mgs. Lorazapam and 25mgs. Amitryptiline at night to help me sleep better.

Today, a Neurologist wanted me to start on Cymbalta (30mg. at night) for 2 weeks, then 1 in the morning, and 1 at night after the 2 weeks.

I'm a little worried about taking this, as the website said it's meant for severe depression (as well as for diabetic neuropathy).  The "severe" depression part bothers me.  I've already left a message ofr our HIV/AIDS specialist about it, but was wondering if anyone out htere has had experience with it.

Depression can cause physical symptoms- pain in joints, achy flu like feelings in the body. I have had both of those problems when my depression was not treated well. From what I understand, Cymbalta also helps with the physical symptoms of depression.

If the Cymbalta is also used to treat diabetic neuropathy with success, I guess it makes sense that it could help with the hiv neuropathy.

I would say try it, just beware of any drug interactions. If it has the potential to help, in my opinion, I would try it.

Hi Christine, thanx.

I have a family history of depression, bi-polar, add but none has been diagnosed with me (my mother and younger brother have been diagnosed with them).

The Cymbalta really messed me up. Even tho' it was only 30mgs., I took it early in the evening, was kinda woozy about 2 hours later, and when I woke up the next day, I felt like s__t, with my left leg hurting even worse, cramps in it some of the night and  stinging pain in it.  I called the MD who prescribed it, and he was surprised at how my system reacted.

So now I was prescribed Nortriptyline (10mgs.).  He wants me to try 1 tonight (although I still feel kinda cruddy), and try that dose for a few days, then try 1 in the a.m. and 1 in the p.m.

Frankly, I'm not sure I like this, as I've had my share (and someone else's) of psycho-active stuff years ago (shrooms, different kinds of LSD, mescaline).  And to me, that stuff was "safer" than this stuff I'm getting prescribed (I know, I know, I'm no MD).

Anyhow, we'll see how this goes.  All I know is my left leg hurts worse than it did before the Cymbalta, maybe this will help.

i am on 25mg of Nortriptyline for neuropathy which is a neuropronephrine for pain. and i take zoloft for depression. so basically Cymbalta is 2 depression drugs in one. it has neuropronephrine and some other anti depressant.  i am happy enough taking them in 2 pills instead of one.  i have a friend who swears by cymbalta. and she has been on just about all anti-d's outthere. she tried Neurontin and had a sucidal episode. personally Neurontin is too toxic a choice for me and will stick with Notriptyline for my neuropathy.
