How are you feeling about life? **POLL**
« on: September 17, 2006, 05:29:03 PM »
Fall is in the air...  The Aspen's are turning gold and beginning to loose their leaves, snow is in the air.   Fall has always been a beautiful time for me, but last year was horrific cuz I was dyin with mother nature.  I have been walking around now thinking about what comes next.  But in general, after a year of living with my diagnosis, I want to shrug a bit of this imminent danger off, and plug away at the better qualities to life.   So, I voted "Fantastic."  Why?  Cuz I have found friends here who have given me inspiration to trudge the road to happy destiny in whatever form that may take...

I hope others might be on the same path as me but I know there are so many emotions that toy with us at any given moment...  The poll might give us all a clue what state we are in... (don't be ruff on me, this is my first time at a poll) ;)

Love

Hi Eric

Spring is in the air here in NZ..weather is not the best but the bulbs have survived the winter and are in bloom...as did my animals. I have 9 new lambs running and jumping around the paddocks, as well as two bottle feeders running amok in the house...so I'm feeling pretty dammed good right now..same goes for my health.

I'm feeling kind of sad about life today this has nothing to do with HIV however so that in itself is an achievment I suppose!

I don’t know where the summer has gone too. “Blink” I must not have been looking while hiding under my rock the past few months.

Well, I did have two surgeries done since May (Ouch, Ouch!) and now I’m about to have a second biopsy done on my prostate in about a week. Then I have to decide what treatment needs to be done at that point.

My bills are paid. Work is being done on the house. My car is running well. And, presently I have only nice people in my life right now. No users or downers.

All things considered my life/health are pretty good. Thanks for making me appreciate this sunny California day a little bit more.

Hello Eric,

Fall certainly hasn't arrived here in Florida yet, we are still having the temps up in the 90's. I will be looking forward to that first major cold front to get here, to help cool things down a little bit.

There isn't really much of a fall down here, the change is barely noticible. I like and miss the smell of fall and the leaves. Everthing smells so earthy.... !
Having lived down here for 26 years now, if the temp drops to 60 I get cold!! :P But at the same time I find it energizing.

The Best-----Ray
PS I feel pretty good about life most of the time !!

I'm feeling pretty good.  Things have cooled down here from where they were this time last month when it was 100 million degrees.

The fall is nice and it just makes ya feel warm and cozy.  I can't wait for winter though, when it turns really cold...Then I'll know that 2 weeks of 100+ degrees everyday was worth it!

Last night I picked up eastern Iowa's bi-monthly gay newspaper. The headline was the attack on six gay men at the San Diego LGBT Pride celebrations. (I had somehow missed reading about this six weeks ago, when the attack occured.) One of the men had his skull bashed in. I guess what people say about delayed reactions or catharsis is true: finally the tears came. I demolished a bottle of cheap red wine and cried for two hours. Did I have a close shave last weekend? Was I lucky that the assailants didn't have baseball bats and had the grace to run off before really serious damage was done? Was it even gay bashing at all? I don't know. Still, I wept for, yes, the hatred and stupidity "out there."

And yet... I'm listening to Liza Minelli singing "Maybe This Time" from Cabaret, again and again tonight. (Is that the most cliched gay piano bar song? I think so.) And I feel great; I checked "Fantastic." My health is, touch wood, good. I have good friends, in the real world and online. I have a good sex life (which I would not have expected a year ago). I have no idea whether the career I've chosen for myself -- writer -- will ever lead me to fame and fortune; it's brutal out there; yet I'm so happy that I've chosen, after stumbling around a lot,  the vocation I now know I was born for. I'm excited about some essays I'm working on. I'm throwing two dinner parties this week. I'm singing in a queer choir. I'm volunteering at Iowa's prisons. I work very hard, and I love getting drunk once a week. The "black dog" of depression hasn't raised it's ugly head for a while. I'll be 34 in a couple of months -- welcome, mid-thirties -- and I have never felt more in control of my life.

As far as I'm concerned, life begins at 30. Auden said, borrowing from Zola and Kierkegaard, that each day must begin by swallowing its toad of failure and disgust. I now know how to do that with a minimum of pain.

So that's my update. To borrow from newt (Matt): Now playing, "Baby, It's Cold Outside" from the movie Neptune's Daughter.

Love,
Jay

Her finely-touched spirit had still its fine issues, though they were not widely visible. Her full nature, like that river of which Cyrus broke the strength, spent itself in channels which had no great name on the earth. But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.

LOL Matty... You just need hugs!!

Eric,

Life is a wonderful gift everyone is given every day.  I do my best to be thankful for having the chance to be with the ones I love and watching my daughter turn into a wonderful young woman.  Though it breaks my heart that her father can't experience this with me, I know he's here watching over us.

My life has been full of loss in the past year, losing my husband then my father a year later.  But I am strong and will move on.  I will enjoy this gift and show my daughter that moving on is a positive thing.

You all be well, and remember that no matter how bleak things are looking, Life is a gift to cherish.

Think of each day as a "new dawning"... a new beginning...

We had our first frost Saturday night. Took out much of my garden, so I am freezing, picking, etc., like mad.

Ah fall! I love the seasons, all of them, but fall is great fun. Since I also love orange, and the pumpkins are changing colors to reflect this, I feel wonderful.

All in all, its great to still be breathing.

Well,I admit I am optimistic even though I cant seem to break the 200 t mark. It seems to me we have many promising prospects and a few that have just arrived(tmc125-Integrase). I am very optimistic about the prospects of therapeutic vaccines, Even if we all still have to take drugs, we might just put and end to this whole resistance thing or possably cut down to mono therapy or scheduled treatment interuptions with-out the fear of resistace. My main fear is that Big Pharma doesn't want to lose all the $$$$ to a therapeutic vaccine, just my 2 cents.

Had a fabulous summer of travel.  Spent way too much doing it and loved it.  Back to work and loving that too.  Lots of fall festivals about in the Hudson Valley.  Leaves should change soon.  Lost 14 lbs since beginning of summer.  Life's going really well.

Hi Eric and everyone,
This was a hard one to answer.  I have 2 answers to combine.  I do feel optomistic but also scared/ frightened recently with long term side effects of taking the "poison" .  My Lipids are very high alnong with triglycerides due to the "posion" but I will have a consult with a cardiologist to maybe relieve my fears.  Hope evryone has a good week.   Rachel

Joel - The "devil" title has been reserved for far better than me..  I think its just interesting in taking the pulse of the community to see where we are as a group...  All in all, I think we are in pretty dam good shape...  I only wish for the poll to move away from optimism to a higher plateau..   I want to see everyone, enjoying what this world has to offer in however way it is presented to each one of us...   You have known me to long to think elsewise...   I also know we are all trying to push our envelopes to the furthest and I think after reading so many threads, that we as a group are succeeding even to the point of being a bit verbose at times, and the little devils come out in all of us..  But the genuine compassion is also just dripping around here to...

I didn't take the poll since "dysthymic" isn't a choice.

Regardless, I shall share with you my usual worldview as aptly expressed by Mrs. Dorothy Parker:

Rivers are damp.
Acids stain you;
And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren't lawful;
Nooses give.

Hi Eric,
My dog and I were on Jones Pass about a week ago and got snowed on. I drove over there because I love hiking in the cold weather, but all the thunder and lightening from a passing storm forced us back to the safety of the truck. On the way out I was gathering wood to burn in my stove when the snow started. My dog was having fun running around in the stuff while I was worrying about being able to drive up and over the pass in an early snow storm.

The whole experience was moocho fun! Life is looking up!

I'm going with scared/frightened. Been 10 months, still watching to see where this goes. Dr. tomorrow (6 weeks instead of 3 mos). She wants me on meds-one of those earlier/better people-lol

I'm also feeling quite empty. No ones knows yet. I've considered each person in my life, and for many reasons, I've decided that at this point no one needs to know, nor can some handle it.

I'm a bit relieved, paid off an 80k equity line. Dad died 2 weeks after diagnosis. Wasn't a wealthy man, but now I have extra $ each month!!! (for meds?, extra co-pays? got a letter from H.I. carrier today. hepA and B Vaccines not covered?????????) lol whatever.

I love the fall. It's beautiful here on Long Island. The air smells so fresh , and the crickets sound delightful(as long as they stay OUTSIDE) If only there were someone special to share these beautiful nights.  :-*

But I loathe the winters alone. It's cold and so dark. I discovered I may be pos last Nov, confirmed in Dec, and this is going to be a better winter than the last one, but still difficult to deal with.

But on a brighter note!!!!!! I find these forums a great source of information, and aside from the few nasty ones, a lot of laughs. Tonite I discovered a little piece of Sunshine---Mouse. I read all of his posts with great interest. His excitement in some posts made my heart beat faster, and other stories made my heart sink. All-in-all, his writings make me think he's so mature, yet he maintains his adolescence in an absolutely adorable way!I've seen him mentioned in some posts, and to those who protect him here at all costs-thank you.

Well, there's my $5.75 worth!

I said fantastic.  I've started going out a lot recently and being "normal"...for the first time in almost 4 years.  I finally felt ok mentally...health wise HIV isn't to much conern for me, no meds yet and CD4 has remained stable at 700+ average for almost 4 years.  Actually had two guys ask me out to dinner in the span of three weeks.  Talk about a shocker...maybe my new attitude is really noticeable.

I'm feeling great.  No freeze yet, but the melons have stopped growing.  A few tomatoes on the vine and that's about it.  Went to the nursery for their fall sale and bought some fruit trees and blueberries for planting.

Now if the deer eat everything, I'll be pissed but I'll still be on top of the world.

Do you think this should be a daily poll?

Boo, are you getting treated for your dysthymia? It's every bit as insidious and debilitating as depression "proper." Jay

George Eliot, Middlemarch, final paragraph

I'm good!  Not sure how to answer the poll, but I love Fall and evrything that comes with it...earlier sunsets, cooler mornings (59 in Austin this morning!) and snapdragons are a coldweather flower in my region!  The butterfly milkweeds are starting to set pods, and I even saw a monarch flitting around them Sunday. The fall invitations are coming in, though I've yet to switch out the wardrobe since it still gets into the 90s daily.

I'm going to see Dancerboy in Rocky Horror soon, and Hallowe'en's coming soon...damn, I guess I'm feeling optimistic...dare I say...fantastic?
