Group of Chimpanzees injected with HIV and hepatitis 30 years ago and taken from mothers as babies, finally released to light of day:

  • It just is, OK?

Wow, that brought tears to my eyes. I bet it was an even more emotional moment for the keepers who worked for over a decade to bring the chimps to that point in their lives.

Another good video of the event is here. Same footage, but with one or two additional scenes. (no voice-over)

I wish my German wasn't so rusty. I could only understand a small bit of the first video's voice-over. Anyone care to give a rough translation?

I think it's important that when we think of the history of this pandemic and all the sacrifices our human brothers and sisters made through the years, that we also spare a thought for all the other intelligent beings - like these chimps - who sacrificed their lives and helped bring us the treatments we have today. They deserve our gratitude too.

I hope those chimps live out the rest of their lives in some happiness. They certainly deserve it.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

wow! This was viral a few days ago; but with the German and limited write-up, I never realized that these chimps had been in HIV and hepatitis studies. Thirty years?? I guess that makes these guys our brothers in the epidemic, and LTSes to boot. ;) It's nice to see that even more pozzies have survived decades of living with this virus. ;D (maybe this should be cross-posted in the LTS forum. LOL)

Bravo to our brothers and enjoy the grass, the sun, the fresh air, and life!
