Freddy Mercury was one  of my favorite musicians.  I remember how I idolized him growing up and how his charm, wit, personality made me feel comfortable as a gay teenager.

I also remember how hurt I was upon learning of his death.

I still miss him - and I know the world mourns the loss of such a talented and innovative singer/artist.

Wow, this November will mark twenty years since his death. I had only been living on The Rock about six months when he went and I remember all the coverage in the British press like it was only yesterday. Sad times.

I love this Google Doodle of Freddie.

It got me thinking that Google wasn't even around when Freddy died. I wonder if he'd have a Twitter account if he were still alive? Maybe he'd be a member here - "Mister Fahrenheit".  So much has changed in twenty years. ~sigh~

Here's a rather touching photo of Freddy with his lover, Jim Hutton, who was also poz and died from cancer January 1st, 2010.

Such a prophetic song ---

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ADh8Fs3YdU

The Show Must Go On
Empty spaces - what are we living for
Abandoned places - I guess we know the score
On and on, does anybody know what we are looking for...
Another hero, another mindless crime
Behind the curtain, in the pantomime
Hold the line, does anybody want to take it anymore
The show must go on,
The show must go on
Inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on.
Whatever happens, I'll leave it all to chance
Another heartache, another failed romance
On and on, does anybody know what we are living for?
I guess I'm learning, I must be warmer now
I'll soon be turning, round the corner now
Outside the dawn is breaking
But inside in the dark I'm aching to be free
The show must go on
The show must go on
Inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on
My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies
Fairytales of yesterday will grow but never die
I can fly - my friends
The show must go on
The show must go on
I'll face it with a grin
I'm never giving in
On - with the show -
I'll top the bill, I'll overkill
I have to find the will to carry on
On with the -
On with the show -
The show must go on...

Such a prophetic song ---

Actually, probably not so much prophetic as testimonial.  That song is from the album Innuendo, and was recorded at the close of Mercury's life when he was sometimes too frail to even stand...and sang from the floor.

When listened to in the context of who he was and the situation he was facing, the album leaps from simply yet another exquisite release to nothing short of a fucking masterpiece in my estimation.

Freddy was a true beauty and there never will be another.

I saw a film about Freddy and that song The show must go on was intended by him as a sort of a goodbye swan song for the people he loved and his fans . That segment brought tears to my eyes .

I didn't realize that it was his birthday until the Google Doodle hit. Explains the Queen documentaries that have been on. I have been a huge Queen fan since 1977 when I when I discovered them and then promptly went out and got every album they had at then time. Four I think. 30 plus years later "Somebody to Love" still sends shivers down my spine.

Aroha to you too Jan!

I recently heard a straight 25-year old guy say that he thought Freddie Mercury was the best rock lead singer of all time. This was heartening since I was under the impression most 25-year-olds had never heard of him (or maybe had vaguely heard of him). Katy Perry has been very vocal about his influence on her.
