Lil Wayne Mixes Self-Esteem With HIV By The POZ Staff on August 31, 2011 4:52 PM | No Comments
By Jennifer Morton (Managing Editor, POZ)

[Editor's Note: This blog entry contains explicit lyrics.]

I'll admit I don't know that much about Lil Wayne or his music. I know he is a popular rap artist, but rap isn't really my first choice when it comes to music.

But last week, one of the POZ editors sent me a link to the article "Abortions, HIV: Lil Wayne's Video for 'How to Love' Goes Deep." I was intrigued, so I watched Weezy's new video directed by Chris Robinson. (I might not care much for rap, but I am hip enough to know Lil Wayne's nickname is Weezy...)

Anyway...the song/video is a story of a young woman and how certain events in her life led her to have low self-esteem. As a result, she makes poor choices and eventually ends up in an emergency room with a doctor telling her that she has HIV. (The ER scene was a bit overdramatic, I might add, but the point was made.) The video then goes into "rewind" and shows what her life might have been like had she been taught how to love herself and others. A pretty powerful message, right?

We were considering if we should write something about the video on POZ.com when Hurricane Irene started barreling up the coast. As I prepped for the impending storm, I forgot about Lil Wayne until Sunday night when I found myself watching the Video Music Awards on MTV. Lil Wayne was scheduled to close the show, and when he came onstage he began performing "How to Love." I thought it was an interesting choice for him to sing to promote his new album Tha Carter IV (it was released at midnight after the award ceremony). But as soon as he finished the last chorus, Lil Wayne segued into another song on his album called "John."

To be honest, I had no idea what the song was about because every other word was bleeped out. I listened for a while, but the bleep bleep bleeps became so annoying that I turned off the TV and went to bed. But the next day I kept thinking about the juxtaposition of those two songs and I wondered what the heck "John" was about. Here's the first refrain:

Fo' fo' bulldog, my muthafucking pet
I point it at you and tell that muthafucker fetch
I'm fucking her good, she got her legs on my neck
I get pussy, mouth and ass, call that bitch triple threat
When I was in jail she let me call her collect
But if she get greedy, I'm a starve her to death
Top down, it's upset been fucking the world and nigga and I ain't cum yet!
You fuck with me wrong, I knock your head off your neck

Hmm.... not quite as empowering as "How to Love."

So while I'd like to give props to Lil Wayne for creating a song with a message about the importance of self-esteem, it's hard to do so after hearing the message of his other material.

As for my music choices, I think I'll just keep on listening to Adele and Katy Perry.

Actually, knowing this sort of backstory to a song would make it more significant to me, and make me take to it more.

And personally, something about those two selections seem very cohesive to me, both seeming to be about the value we place on ourselves and one another.

But what do I know?  I'm as white bread as they come and don't expect anyone to take hip hop criticism from me all that seriously, but still...

i think you're right. as a side note i'd like to point out that the majority of mainstream hip hop/black music is purchased by non-blacks. i've gone to enough concerts by black artists and have noticed on more than one occasion the majority of the ticket buyers and fans were not all black. i get more than 1/2 of my hip hop from my white (and not so white, lol) friends. lastly, the biggest selling rap act is white. this is the world we live in :).

the video was a little bit much for me. i thought it was more a lost love/love hardship song. seeing it mated with hiv hit home more ways than i am comfortable with at this time. im sure its just initial shock and some of the more immediate shit im dealing with.

keep it coming.

best,
d

I think with hip hop, currently moreso than with other genres of music, people tend to make the mistakes of assuming:  1.  that an attitude or behavior being presented is being endorsed rather than just reflected, and 2.  that the speaker in a song and the performer are one and the same.

I guess it just depends on which type of music is most popular at any given time.  That sort of thing used to happen all the time with hair metal.

We don't hear much lil wayne in Dawsonville.

Speaking of the gay bar, I totally wanted to fuck the lesbian bartender last night -- she was way hotter than the two boring queens. And this was my first time in there since they renovated, and it's not a mafia slum fest anymore. In fact, they now have about 40 beer selections on tap -- they wisely hired some owners of the top breeder bar in the city to curate the beer.

For a city with a white population of 39% the bar's patrons look like a GOP convention.

Hmm let me see.

If I ruled the world, then the first messages rap/hip hop music would transmit about living with HIV is to deal with today and the future. Not some fantasy alternative reality about how much better life would be if one hadn't been such a fuck up and thus punished by AIDS.

Oh, yeah, and HIV is a nasty virus, and has no morales. and for every easy stereotype of the self-destructive HIV+ victim there are people who just caught a nasty virus, and are not and were never fuckups in their lives.

Lets see.  Daddy was in prison. Girl had no respect, lets dudes abuse her. Becomes a tart.  Becomes a stripper. Then prostitute.  Teary diagnosis drama drama drama.

Oh, the alternative universe, daddy marries mommy, glowing girl graduates HS/college? wears intelligent person glasses blah blah.

Am I the only one who thinks this narrative is hackneyed, judgmental and stupid?

I didn't wanna say it, but I agree.

To be honest I just can't stand Lil' Wayne.  He and Lil' Kim give hip-hop and rap a really bad name.
