Movies on homosexual issues / gay culture
« on: August 19, 2011, 01:47:13 PM »
Which are your favourite gay themed/ gay culture movies?

I really liked:-

Prayers for Bobby

C.R.A.Z.Y (French Canadian)

Queens (Spanish)

Well not a movie...but the (US) Queer As Folk Season 1 is my absolute favourite.

Elephant -- Gus Van Sant.

If, after watching that, you need to cleanse yourself try In the Gloaming.

It all balances out. :)

I'll always love the camp and self-loathing of The Boys in the Band. Plus the last half of the film is deliciously evil. I was quite happy when this finally came out on DVD three years ago almost 40 years after it was actually made.

Disgusting.

If you want to see REAL queer cinema, I suggest you turn your jaundiced eye to the 1959 classic Victim. Honor Blackman and Dirk Bogarde at their peak.

Some that come to mind off the top of my head are:

Brokeback Mountain - Beyond the hype, this was a moving love story and well acted.

Parting Glances - Funny and honest story about the people we love and the people we are in love with.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - ABBA turds, vaginal projectiles, "a cock in a frock on a rock"... need I say more.

Jeffrey - Not a perfect movie but had enough great scenes that I forget it's flaws.

I'll always love the camp and self-loathing of The Boys in the Band. Plus the last half of the film is deliciously evil.

I saw that movie a couple of months after coming out and having just started to socialize with other gay men. At 19 it made me seriously reconsider coming out. If The Moral Majority was smart they would have acquired the rights to that movie and promoted it as proof that homosexuality is a degenerate lifestyle. Of course now it is so dated it is of no use to future vice-president Bachmann.

A love story with an awfully sad ending, catered for a largely straight audience to secretly feel fortunate that they don't have to live through what they saw but yet say they feel sorry for the characters.

On HIV issues- Phir Milenge (We will meet again) and My Brother Nikhil are alright. Don't know if you can get them on DVD with subtitles.

On gay stuff, it is usually there as side stories in mainstream Bollywood movies. A recent movie that copied an earlier Hollywood one (don't know the name) was about 2 straight guys pretending to be gay lovers and move into a flat with a girl they both fall in love with (and she continues to think they are a gay couple). The movie is called Dostana (friendship).

The movie Fire (by Deepa Mehta) is about two Indian lesbians I think it came out in the early 2000's.  There are quite a few others that have explored the subject but they're usually screened at select venues and such.

No, they are for everyone. A Bollywood movie without song and dance is like sex without orgasm.

Yeah what I meant was, you really don't see any Hedras (transvestites) in any of those movies @ least not in a starting roll  ;)

Trick was another fun movie.

Oh come on girl -- that's a really bad movie. The only redeeming part was the Columbian/Hungarian straight boy with large ears that played the gay stripper.

Another BAD movie......

ALL gay movies are BAD.  They are all usually nothing but a series of sterotypes and catch phrases strung together with horrible acting and even worse writing.   I've always wondered why the gays who are supposed to be so creative simply cannot make a quality movie.

You bring up a very interesting point, I've always wondered why , it really gives the GLBT community a very bad name...... they are all like the way Blacks were treated in movies, in the 50 & 60 it's really makes me mad, that gays are portrayed this way, kinda like were not good enough like are str8 counter parts are.....

Actually some of the best gay movirs have been documentaries.  There was recently a documentary about the stonewall riots (cant remember the name).  It was really great.  We do better telling a story without all the flare.

There is no uniform gay culture.  So there is no cohesive "gay cinema".  The b-movie or independent movie fluff. its really hit or miss and obviously one reason it is SO marginal is that there is little audience for stuff made with so little creativity or authenticity.
The nellies on A-list ARE gay men and the characters ARE pretty negative stereotypes but I don't think because they are nellies. Its because the concept is so shitty there are no grown up issues put into the narrative.
Queer as Fok was fun and pretty good representation of a certain slice of gay America (all white, not too poor, not too fucked up).

About the only time you will have great gay cinema is if there is real artist making the thing, so: Almodovar, Gus Van Zant, etc. or directors who were gay all through the history of cinema who put out amazing displays of a certain "gay" esthetic, if that exists, and I think it does.  Whether its melodrama, or comedy, noir, whatever.  But you won't often have an obvious "gay theme" but the film is representative of "gay culture".

All "gay movies" are not bad. THey are what they are.  Sometimes they can be cute or moving.  If its very independent or very low budget, you can't compare it to Almodovar (now) or big Hollywood productions.

Also, there are these tiny "gay movies" produced in every country that does cinema, it seems, so it can be a way to get a look at other lives, other cultures.

I just did a cycle of crappy cheap German "gay movies" and my German friends poo-poo'd them just like some of you are poo poo-ing the american ones.  But I thought one or two were watchable and interesting.

OK, time to separate your delicates from the roughs and crank up your Maytags.

Here are two of my choices:

My Beautiful Laundrette - 1985
Dirty Laundry - 2006

Both films have good moments and tell their respective stories with hard and soft turns.

You might want to check out the director's cut of Bear Cub (Cachorro). It is not as trite or "feel good" as the  trailer implies. The main character also happens to be HIV+.

As for documentaries on "A List" gays, or related to gay culture:

Unzipped was made when Isaac Mizrahi was at the top of his game, pretty much A List, and its fascinating.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114805/

There are a number of good documentaries on Andy Warhol

Theres a good look at Sam Wagstaff and Robert Mapplethorpe
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1003113/

I thought James Franco as Allen Ginsberg was watchable in Howl
http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0033478/

ditto for  Philip Seymour Hoffman as Capote
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379725/

Lagerfeld got his own documentary a few years ago (meh but nice eye candy) and Joan Rivers one this year was fascinating (I know, not gay, but come on.)

So we don't need worry about the nellies on the frivolous A LIST NEW YORK representing gay a listers!

Meech I didn't say I didn't like the A-list, but I can't stand that kinda company, every-time I do, I end up fighting some dude, that wants to kick the ass of the queens for acting like that, and I'm too old for that SHIT, I hated having to defend queens that acted that way, it's NO FUN when you have to fight off some str8 dude......over some BULLSHIT, and nobody else would help me...... don't get me wrong I love queens, but, I just don't like the bad trouble that it can bring, not everyone likes queens or gays..... now do u feel me ;)

:D well let's hope not, but I've seen all of this before, some guys you just can't take anywhere, only the ones that know how to act in public, and conduct themselves in a adult mature manner, I've known some queens  in my lifetime that just won't or cannot do THIS, so I would always AVOID them, if I didn't I had to get VERY BUTCH when the shit-hit-the-fan w/ some str8 dude that didn't like gays

Bruce LaBruce - Hustler White. It's pretentious and explicit with lots of bad acting and bad camera work, lighting etc. and just weird,  but I like the underground and b-movie quality of it.
