Just hope it's not the beginning of another round of terrorist attacks in Europe.

This is really scary.

What have our Norwegian friends ever done, except be a bit moody and like a sunbed a bit too much.

There's now been a second attack by a gunman wounding five at a Labour party youth camp.

With Norway partaking in military operations in Afghanistan and Libya, it won't surprise me if Al Qaeda is behind this. Waiting to hear who claims responsibility for this.

I don't get it. Why would Al Qaeda attack the Ministry of Oil at 3.20 PM on a Friday? It's not going to cause a lot of casualties as most employees would have gone home for the weekend at that time.

It's terrorism alright, but is it Al Qaeda?

GH - a portion of this supports your assertion...

Why would terrorists want to attack Norway?By Robert Windrem
NBC News Investigative Producer for Special Projects

Senior U.S. officials say they cannot yet ascribe responsibility for Friday's attack on the government building in Oslo.

"What you see is what we know," said a senior administration official, who like the others spoke on condition of anonymity.

However, they and others point to several possible connections that could lead officials to consider whether al-Qaida is behind the attacks.

• Norwegian special forces have been fighting in Afghanistan for many years and Ayman al Zawahiri, al-Qaida's new leader after the death of Osama bin Laden, has been threatening Norway since 2003, warning that its participation in the U.S.-led military campaign against radical Islam in Afghanistan would result in an attack on the Norwegian homeland. Norwegian special forces operate in central Afghanistan, near Kabul.
•On July 9, 2010, three Norwegians were indicted for planning an attack on targets in Oslo, apparently Chinese targets.  Two of the three, a Uighur (Chinese Muslim) and an Uzbeki, were arrested in Norway, while a third, an Iraqi with Norwegian residence, was grabbed in Germany. The detentions were coordinated with arrest in New York of Najibulla Zazi, an Afghan-American man who wanted to blow up New York City subways. The two plots were believed to have been put together by al-Qaida’s central command in Pakistan -- Osama Bin Laden and Zawahiri.
•Last week, Mullah Krekhar, founder of Ansar al Islam (the first Iraqi group affiliated with al-Qaida), was indicted in Oslo for threatening Norwegian government officials with death if he were to be deported. Krekhar took refuge in Oslo in early part of the last decade and has been seeking asylum.  In comments to various news media, he threatened attacks if he was sent abroad, mainly on opposition figures who have long called for his extradition to the U.S.
•In January 2006, the Norwegian government apologized to Muslims worldwide after the publication of 12 cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad in the Norwegian newspaper Magazinet.

This is horrible.

Norway police say gunman kills at least 80 youths

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/07/23/us-norway-blast-toll-idUSTRE76M0AU20110723

(Reuters) - A gunman shot dead at least 80 youths at a summer camp of the ruling Labour Party on Friday, police said.

"The updated knowledge we are sitting on now is at least 80," police chief Oystein Maeland told a news conference. "We can't guarantee that won't increase somewhat," he said, adding some were badly injured.

Previously, police had said that at least 10 had been killed in the shooting at the Utoeya island northwest of Oslo, along with seven killed by a bomb blast in central Oslo.

Maeland said the attack had reached "catastrophic dimensions."

It's very disturbing to hear the world news today out of Norway, two seemingly separate incidents of violence and bloodshed and it's too bad there doesn't appear to be a day in the future when this kind of senseless violence will come to an end in this world.

Looks like this could be the work of a Norwegian Christian nationalist and folks naturally jumped the gun to blame Muslims.

Who jumped the gun? I have been covering this all day, it's not 11:31PM CDT here in Houston, and I have not read anywhere where it was assumed it was Muslims. The NRK and TV2 Norway reported around midday that a 'Nordic' man was in custody and reporting all day from the BBC/GURADIAN, Deutsch Welle, CNN and CBS suggested a 'national' or 'domestic' terrorist act.

From Miss P.'s link:

In the immediate aftermath of the attacks earlier today – a car bomb at a government building that includes the offices of Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, and a second gun attack on an island retreat for youth wing of the prime minister's labor party is to be believed -- there was speculation in this paper and elsewhere that Islamist militants could have been involved.

Such a strange world we live in.

Only 24 hours after the absolute horror and carnage in Norway, the BBC News here decides that the death of Amy Winehouse is all they're interested in.

Apparently, we've moved on.

Don't know about that - I put BBC news on at seven pm and the lead story was Oslo and they spent over twenty minutes on Oslo and Oslo related subjects. They only start talking about Amy at 17:25 and concluded the piece at 17:39. They're now discussing Oslo again.

On ABC World News tonight they made a note of stating that on this guys facebook page he "likes" Dexter, video games, and christianity.  And this is relevant because???

I like Dexter and Video games too and have been known to enter a church or two...does that make me a serial killer also?

Not really a "serial killer," more a "mass murderer," (there is a difference between the two).

This guy had been planning this attack for a very long time and he was brutally effective at carrying it out.  I just don't understand why if he had political or religious differences with someone he felt he had to kill children to prove his point.  It's cowardly and pathetic.

It was a summer camp for young social democrats. He has accused the Soc.Dem's of corrupting Norway in allowing the creation of a multiethnic society, and by being lenient with immigration from esp. muslim countries. So, in his sick mind he thought he'd better kill the children because they would be the next generation of social democrat politicians. Something like that.

Trying to understand his reasons makes me feel like my mind is cracking. Thinking about it is almost dangerous as it momentarily will make you loose your faith in humanity. It gives me a headache - just like thinking hard about why space is infinite.
