Do straight men "manscape" only to please themselves?
« on: June 24, 2011, 03:32:51 PM »
I like to listen to Slate's Podcasts.  There is a cultural one and political one and they are quite Eastern Seabord and NY Intellectual.  Feel like I keep in touch with my former life.

There is one for women, called Double X, which I listen to once and awhile too.
feed://media.slate.com/media/slate/Podcasts/doublex/doublex1.xml

This one had three women who I assume are 30-50 ish talking about men (understood to be straight men) who get rid of body hair.

Geez, they all expressed bewilderment and also disgust with the practice. They all thought the men only do it for their own vanity and they seemed to be sure no women really like this.

They had some things to say about the irony of men doing this to women having to do it for so many decades to please men, and the feminist movement against it in the 70's etc etc.

Also spoke about Weiner's hairless chest "to please his own vanity about being a bit ripped" they said.

None of them did their homework about hairy versus hairlessness fads in recent gay history.

It all seemed out of touch.  I'm sure there must be straight women who aren't disgusted with the shaved crotches, asses, pits, chests, legs, etc etc of their men.

I'm sure there must be women who even like it.

I dunno, I've seen the straight guys shaving and buzzing and waxing since the late 80's, doesn't seem to be new at all.  But that was NY.   Lots of the sporty gym straight guys in Switzerland are all trimmed.   If it really turned women off I don't think they'd do it, cause they'd get laid less.

And the metrosexuals -- they've been around for at least a generation!!! Prettier and smoother than gays!

And all the guys in straight porn are buzzed and shaved.

These commentators are out of touch, aren't they?

It not so much as they are out of touch, as they represent a segment of married women and that's why they are commentators. They are presenting their own views on why straight men may "manscape" and how some women may react. I'm sure their is some truth in their views, but that really does not matter. They are expressing their opinions, nothing more, nothing less. I would however, like to see some pictures of these straight men, as I would bet a few are anything but straight and if so, manscaping is the least of their worries.

Ah come on that's too easy.  Lots of straight men manscape, doesn't make them in the least gay!  ;D

Thanks for the manscape term!

How to you gay guys feel about manscaping on us?
Indifferent? For it? Against it?

I don't mind - whatever floats his boat probably floats mine.

Its a bit annoying when some people have SUCH particular demands in others however, about hairiness or hairlessness, but then, I guess I'm more all customers served and other people have very specialised tastes!

I just automatically assumed it was a gay thing.  I have certain areas waxed and I've never seen a straight man at the spa I go to.  Maybe they just do after hour appointments and enter through the back door?  I always though gay men and straight women would have similar ideas on what is hot, but I guess not.

You know you are getting old when the barber offers to trim eyebrows or hairy ears!

I think you gave your own answer, as it depends on who the people are and what their tastes may be. I don't care for overly hairy men and the only reason that I manscape is because I have so little body hair and if I don't trim it, I risk looking like Phyllis Diller on a bad hair day.

We could imagine some straight ladies wouldn't mind their beau's getting rid of their back hair.

What really seemed to give these commentators the heeby jeebies is shaved crotch.

I wonder why they feel that way? Maybe they needed the fur to cover how "diminished" their partners may be.

My partner insists on manscaping my back and shoulders periodically. I like hairy.

Two weeks ago I saw a most tragic case of manscaping. In the locker room at my gym this guy took his shirt off and I had to do a double take. He had shaved his chest, arms and pits completely smooth but obviously could not reach his back and apparently had no own to help him. This guy had thick black body hair and it looked like he had a black bath mat glued to his back! It looked so bizarre in contrast to the rest of his baby smooth body that I considered recommending a salon where he could have it waxed off.

Ford, that hurts just to read it. Too bad we don't some type of emergency team that could swoop in and help these poor souls. If you cannot reach your entire back, what can you be thinking to do it yourself?

As a straight lady I dont mind when he shaves at all...I actually prefer it shaved!

I guess its just something personal and those ladies were expressing their views.

I just started to have this going on, though so far it's only two hairs in each ear that need attention every four weeks. It's really vile.

Talk to us in another 10 years. Maybe we can start a trend with braided ear hair?

As the hair stopped growing on the top of my head -- it began sprouting everywhere else.  I have to have my partner mow my back on a regular basis....  I try to get some of my money's worth at the barber by having them deal with my overgrown eyebrows and ear hair....  they won't give me a discount for being bald, so.....................  Plus -- once a week I need to shave the tip of my nose.

I'd rather not go through all this manscaping, I know many people find body hair "gross" -- not sure why, it's the same as the hair on your head.  Fortunately, my partner could care less whether the hair is there or not.

I am one of those that can actually shave my face, if need be twice a day.  The older I get the worse it gets. I have to trim down my chest hair at least once a month.  :P  When I grab it and pull it, gets about 2 inches long. It's just uncomfortable, it's incredible how fast it grows, same with arm pit hair.  Once a month for that also. grows like a weed !

Most people I know as they get older, they grow less body hair, for  me it a freakin mangrove.  :D  I get haircuts, about every 3 weeks, another out of control hair growth!  And Ed has to shave a portion of my lower back, once every couple of months, there's a small patch there, that I can't reach. Very little on the shoulders or upper back though.

I'm definitely against it.  I love a hot, hairy man.  However, I'm not a big fan of overly hair shoulders and back.  I'd rather a guy have it thinned out some than shaved completely.  That just looks abnormal to me.  I like to think of it like a lawn; I've never wanted to live on a golf course, but I don't think I'd like an overgrown field, either.

As for shaving... I hate it.  Like Ray, I could shave twice a day if I were going to something formal after work.  I gave all that up about 2.5 years ago - a full beard.  Now, I shave and trim my beard once or twice a week.  As a side benefit, I've noticed how much I'm attracted to bearded men... and how many men are also attracted to bearded men.  ;)

So true. ;)

For me- hot, hairy and muscular or toned guys (Think Hugh Jackman in X Men) are immensely attractive but then so are smooth toned guys. There's no fixed rule.  The only type of facial hair that I usually don't find attractive on a man is a mustache!

The face (a great smile is crucial) is the deciding factor.

I used to try to do my shoulders and upper back, but gave up on it.   It's just ME.

Going to men's campgrounds gives you a lot of freedom to 'be youself'....just sayin.
